go to liverpool on m6

go northwards to blackpool, preston

keep going

veer left / west when you see a sign for "A66"

after 10 miles or so, stop

voila, cumbria.

or approximately here:

from the m6 across to workington and whitehaven... thats sort of the area.

very nice. my paternal grandparents and extended family live there. grim towns and weather but fantastic countriside.

Looking at that map reminds me of the time I woke up in carlisle after supposingly heading home from a weekend in blackpool. apparently, my mate turned on to the motorway the wrong way, and just kept on driving after the other idiot mate of mine told him that he saw a sign for birmingham.

I woke up and asked why the fecking motorway junction numbers were going UP, made them pull over and realised we were in Carlisle!
ARG! Still made it back to the pub for last orders though...

theres ghosts in blackpool! i once went for a drinking weekend there and on the way back to the hotel i decided to have a little nap in a doorway to refresh myself and woke to find my shoes had mysteriously vanished, weird hey?

I have been to Barrow a few times through work. As you say Cumbria's very hilly and wet. Not unlike here!!

hehe deadcat, look at where carlisle is eh.... for the comedy value you should have kept schtum 15 more minutes and waited for their faces to drop as the M6 became the A76 (?) and that big sign saying WELCOME TO SCOTLAND get yer passports oot ya english bastaads went by...

and i thought *I* was bad at navigating - usually only takes 1 junction to realise the mistake :)
