Oil change

Hello. What oil do you lot recommend for a good oil change on a '92 1058 single point injection? It's on about 90,000 and in good condition. On my other car which is a GTI scirocco I put flushing oil in for five minutes, drained, then put Synta Silver semi synthetic in it, which it really seems to like :) - should I put Synta Silver in the Polo as well?

Well, Synta seems to come highly reccomended round these parts. Haven't yet tried it myself due to a large stock of oil in the garage... but considering laying some in for the next full change.

After all it's not particularly expensive even compared to Tesco's oil, if you get it from GSF.

If you're in a pinch however it'll happily chug along on any old 10w40 part-synthetic.

(or 5w50 full synth. or 15w40 part... or 20w50 mineral at 89p a litre, in summer)

lol. Doh!!! must have been thinking of some other completely random car there for a moment. I apologise - 1042 ONLY JOKING 1043.

Hmmm.... Synta seems to be good for most things it seems. I got the last one from GSF - only 11 or 12 quid including VAT I think - I'm also going to pop some engine flushing oil through it first - pain in the arse but nice results. It's seven quid though. Total oil change cost - abotu 20 quid I think.Oil, flush, filter, new sump washer.

bargain! considering the first time round i tried it, i shelled out for castrol at 19.99 for five litres... :shock:

whats that engine flush stuff??

It seemed to be an extremely thin oil that would probably be inadvisable to run the engine on properly, but you drain the old oil out, refill with the thin flushing oil and run for five minutes then drain that out, then do the oil change to the Synta. Effectively changing the oil twice but it's worth doing certainly once a year I reckon.

The flushing oil literally does what it says - it collects up the minute metal particles which come off your engine and flushes them out, hence the thinness of it, I should guess. It came in a white bottle of five litres and is 7 or 8 quid I think from GSF - just ask for flushing oil and they know what you mean.

I didn't bother renewing the sump nut washer when doing the flushing oil as it was only for five minutes. I did renew the washer when I put the Synta in though.

I wouldnt bother with a flushing oil unless the oil hasnt been changed for yearsIf its been changed regularly then there shouldnt be a problem just ditching your old oil and putting some new oil in.

However on the second car I has (mk3 escort) the oil hadnt been changed for years, and had carbonised, so I had a layer of tar on the valvegear and the oil that was doing the lubrication was a water thin.

Yeah, I don't think flushing is needed when regular oil changes are done. I always use synta sliver in my gt's and think it's the best available for them. You could use that or the quantum blue in yours and get a genuine filter from gsf as they are cheaper than most aftermarket cheap ones from motor factors.

Must give this synta stuff a try.. when I filled my engine up after rebuilding it, I forgot to change the sump plug washer and now I've got a small drip of oil coming from it, so I'm going to have to drain it to fit a new one soon anyway.. I feel a trip to GSF Chelmsford coming on..

Yeah I only put the flushing oil in cos I bought the car recently and I can't be totally sure when the last oil change was - agreed though it isn't really needed if the oil changes have been done regularly. Better to be nice to it and spend another seven quid I thought than take the blokes word for it/trust the garage that last did it.

However if I change the oil regularly from now on and use Synta Silver there should be no need for flushing oil 8)

Glad to hear that it seems unanimously that Synta is the one to use......

And a lot better for you engine too by all accounts, having some kind of valve in them - is this correct?
