Aircon Question

Post by ps1 »

I bought a 2014 Polo TDi Blue Motion last week, and I'm just getting to know it. It replaces an old Bora, and our other car is a Passat CC.

With the aircon on at full blast, it does not feel as cold as the Bora used to, nor as cold as the Passat.

I stuck a digital thermometer probe down the air vents, and the air was being cooled. It was quite hot in the car, about 28C, and the aircon got it down to 15C.

Should I expect to get a lower temperature?

14 below ambient with the fan at full speed doesn't sound too bad to be honest.

The AC compressor in my '11 Polo has the size of a bear can, but id does the job OK. I do not believe It reaches sub 4C degrees, as other vehicles with twice the sized compressor does, but here in Scandinavia it does not really matter anyway  .

Make sure that the air vents are not directed above you, and if you do not get any goosebumps, then a health check at an AC specialist and a new carbon cabin filter before the summer might be in order :)

In my wife's 2015 Polo with Climartronic or whatever the auto AC in Polo is called, with an ambient of 16C I got the centre vents down to 7.8C last year, the next day I checked my 2011 Audi S4 with an ambient of 15C I got the centre vents down to 7.5C, now that S4 is probably slightly under charged judging by its running pressures, but as said there is a limit as to what these systems will chill down to, remember auto AC terminal centre vent temperatures always seem to be a bit higher than manual AC system which you can drive as hard as they can work.

Edit:- corrected wrong terminal centre vent temperatures.

Hmmm.
Looks like the AC's not getting the air down to the 6C or 7C that one would expect.
Next stop - an Aircon specialist.

When my daughter came back to work in UK, the first thing that she discovered with her late 2009 Ibiza was that its AC was making hissing noises and not cooling too much, that was last July so that car was almost 8 years old and had not had its AC recharged in all these almost 8 years! If your Polo is not cooling too well after just 4 years I'd think that it has a leak, ie other than the normal issue with R134A passing across rubber seals and rubber pipes - which is expected and allowed.
