Re: Fuel consumption
I never used eco mode and managed to get 5,3L/100km doing 90km/h with adaptive cruse control. That happend only once to my so ... it is doable but why would I do that with gti ... right?

Re: Fuel consumption
With regard to variations in fuel consumption for the same route, I get this.
If I go into town, I can get 40+ MPG
Same route back, lucky to get 30+MPG.
The difference is that it's a slight gradient.
So all the way into town I'm barely touching the throttle, all the way home I'm fighting against a gradient, albeit a very gentle one.

Re: Fuel consumption
Yeah, I expected better MPG too.
It's annoying that I'm getting far better MPG at 70mph than I am around town, when I've bought it as a (primarily) town car.
Really, it amazes me that VW seem have geared it with motorway driving in mind.
I wouldn't have thought a 95bhp car was high on the list for people who do long distances....
I'm actually wondering if I'd have been better getting the 75bhp model.
It can't possibly have the same high gearing as the 95bhp, it wouldn't pull it.
So the lower gearing of the 75bhp would probably make it nicer around town.

Re: Fuel consumption
aircon off saves fuel. it also gives you back a couple of HP
ok my 115 DSG in the summer I did a couple of 55 mile motorway trips. I was inn eco mode, I turned off aircon, I stayed at 56mph and I tried very hard to just keep going nice an easy, I got 69.8mpg on one trip and 68.9 on the other. generally though I find having aircon off, lights off, all other eclectics as off as I can get them. I also turn off stop start just because it don work with DSG. these efforts helps improve MPG. eco mode in mine enables coasting, also cuts the aircon, and mucks about with the other steering settings.

Re: Fuel consumption
I had a non turbo Polo as a loaner for a day, and it was awful, high hearing, no grunt, totally joyless but it got me from A to B. I used to have a base Up, quite perky round town, but a bit lacking in grunt, apparently the GTI is a hoot. But the Up lacks the comfort and relative luxury of the Polo.Andy Beats wrote: ↑Mon Jan 07, 2019 4:22 pm Yeah, I expected better MPG too.

Why doesnt Stop Start work with DSG.
Ok I find ACC brilliant around town you just set it to about 5mph above the traffic flow and as cars slow down in front so does your even to a stop then when they start off again so does yours. saves loads of effort.
Stop start in my view id EFFIN dangerous with DSG. for example if oyur waiting at a roundabout and is busy you spot your gap hit the loud pedal and about a second later the engine fires up and off you go ...missing the gap because of the delay while the engine fires up. at least with manual cars the engine fire up as you depress the clutch so as you hit the gas off you go nicely into the gap.
Mines works ok...isnt it supposed to save fuel?

Re: Fuel consumption
Assuming an individual's main aim in driving style and commute length doesn't change- for me, my mpg on my commute can differ by 20% just by volume of traffic.
Ambient temperature plays a small part on a petrol engine, far more important with a diesel. Mpg drops 10-15% in winter on a diesel, there's less than 5% in it with petrol as efficient petrol combustion is less reliant on a warm engine. A fair portion of that Winter 5% is down to increased use of electrical items such as lighting and heating making your alternator work harder.

Re: Fuel consumption
What was your average speed for each leg of your commute? I use driver information mode in dash for this. On the way to work the roads are clearer than my drive home. As a result, I'm driving quicker and in a higher gear more often on the way to work - it makes a huge difference to be sat at 45mph in 6th rather than 4th at 30mph (or less) for much of the journey.grudgey wrote: ↑Mon Jan 07, 2019 3:42 pm So forgive me for revisting this subject....of which i remain confused it.
Do you think I will get a smoother ride, better throttle response and Similar mpg if I use Normal Mode?
Oh and please explain the mystery of my commute to the station this morning.
6 miles home to station...40.1mpg in eco.
But coming home a short while ago...same route home = 29.1mpg in eco mode.
I'm totally baffled by the variations im getting. And i really do think my driving style is steady and consistent.
I do stick to speed limits.

Re: Fuel consumption
If you are in the frame of mind to be driving in a more economical manner in normal mode than Sport mode, you will see a difference. If you decide to turn off all your electrical gear to try to save fuel, you will notice a difference, if the traffic is favourable that day, you will notice a difference.
However, if you drive it the same way in either mode, there's no difference between normal and Sport except engine noise and change-up/down threshold in DSG if you leave it in S rather than change back to D.if you account for the throttle response and use a lighter foot accordingly in Sport mode.

Re: Fuel consumption
If you are in Sport mode but revert to D by pulling back on the DSG gear lever, the gearbox reverts to normal change up/down rev thresholds when not under heavy throttle, but the throttle remains in full Sport mode response .grudgey wrote: ↑Mon Jan 07, 2019 7:43 pmI really don't understand what you are suggesting...monkeyhanger wrote: ↑Mon Jan 07, 2019 7:23 pm

surely Sport Mode is S.
If you change to D you are no longer in Sport???

Re: Fuel consumption
Not if you have individual mode on - everything set to Sport except engine noise set to either eco for no sound or normal for a believable engine noise (and for me the suspension is set to normal). After your first trip, you will get the box default to D from S anyway, it does not remember box S mode unless you unselect and deselect either Sport or the engine sport mode within individual.

Re: Fuel consumption
I was talking the benefits of Sport mode (throttle response) without the thirst (Not retaining "S" gearshift thresholds) vs normal.
If you want Normal then select Normal. If you want Sport throttle response but everything else behaving as normal then Individual mode as previously said.
It's the "S" mode gear change thresholds that makes Sport thirstier than Normal - nothing else.

Re: Fuel consumption
It is rather confusing with driver profile modes and then the D or S gearbox mode.
Why didn't they just incorperate the gearbox modes in the profile modes? Or did they?
What is sportier - D mode and sport or S mode and normal?

Re: Fuel consumption
Jeez, this sounds super confusing.
When i had my DSG Audi A3, it was D, S or 'manual' (cough...laugh) mode.
