Is it a he - a she - or just a car?

Post by Si_GTi »

I was chatting to a mate the other day about cars in general, and happened to refer to the Polo as "she" during the course of the conversation. He suddenly wanted to know why I was calling my car a "she", and not a "he" or just "it"? And did it have a name?

I think I picked it up as a kid when my parents always refered to the car as a "she" in conversation. When I asked them about it I remember them telling me that it was the accepted norm and that you could use "she" to refer to pretty much any inanimate object like a car or a bike or a boat or whatever...

So? Am I alone in calling my car a she or is it a normal thing? And whilst on the subject, has anyone named their cars? I had a housemate at Uni who named her 205 XS "George", and the replacement 205 DTurbo "George II", but I've never named either of the 2 cars I've ever owned cos its just silly :D

Mine's an "it".

Yeah, cars tend to be she's.. I always feel a bit strange saying it, but it's a fairly common thing :)
Only car I know as 'he' is a knackered old austin metro belonging to one of my friends called Alan.. and a superb machine he is

i dunno... :D

its not beefy or stubborn (or smelly) enough to be a bloke - though its shown remarkable feats of soldiering and stamina before.
not as high maintenance, b1tchy or vindictive (or huggable) enough to be a woman - despite various continual faults that could be construed as such

so yeah... "it"... like a toaster. a very fondly regarded toaster however :D

(which is why its so hard to name it.. know of enough people who think Polly, Betsy, etc is "lonely" and its time we took "her" out for a spin.. harder to give a real name to something thats... yknow... a lump of metal and plastic from various different manufacturers, rather than a truly living thing like a dog)

I call mine a 'she' !

Never really gave her a name as such, just refer to her as 'ma baby' or 'babe'

Definately a "She"...

The Polo was a gorgeous, classy Brunette who I loved dearly. She gave me some grief, but I forgave her time and time again...

The Fabia is a Czech Bride I bought not long ago... She's cheap, but is a proper good ride and gives me no sh1t!!

Oh, and DXG, get your rear washer jet pipe fixed before your neighbours brick your windows for waking them up every night (why does the alarm ALWAYS go off at 3am when the pipe bursts???)

I must be the only guy here with a male car. It was my great auntie's before I came to own it, and she called it Peter. Its just stuck, and can't be shaken off, whenever she shes the car she always says "hello Peter". Mind you, it being male it seems to have a few things in common with me. Its awkward for one, doesn't like to be woken up (it makes a whining noise for about 10 seconds after being stood a while) and likes music loud.

Karl.

just be careful that not too many people get to find out about that, or you'll get endless jokes about washing your peter, polishing peter, etc..... (mostly from me :D)

... i do occasionally allow the car to be a "baby", "child", "monster" or "git", but its still fairly asexual stuff

I call mine a she, actually I call her my 'lo por jai' which roughly translates to 'wifey' or 'honey', the Chinese refer to their cars fondly as they (were) an expensive luxury and men would look after and spend more money on the car than their real wives, which would get them all jealous, I used to call my girldfriend my mistress...ha ha ha!

However I wouldn't give her a name, my sister calls her peugeot 'Fred' and once burst into tears because she had 'hurt' him by reversing into a lamp-post...all I could do was laugh...aren't I cruel! (having said that I think I would do the same if it had happened to me!)
