Random question for people who have Kessy (keyless entry) on their Polo

Post by Griff74 »

As above, just a random thought, what is the fob like that you get with Kessy on the new Polo, I assume it's not the standard key?

It looks exactly like the standard flip key (You can still open the car with the key if you pop the cover off on the drivers door handle).

It still has the open button, open boot button and lock button. You don't get a key barrel on the steering column, but you might have to hold your key against where the ignition would've been if the car is having trouble detecting the key.

It's exactly the same keyfob.
(oops someone beat me to it)
It does seem a wee bit unusual on doing this, any keyless cars I've owned have had completely different fobs.
Although they all still had the lock/unlock.boot buttons too.

Really? That's a bit pants, every car I have seen before that has the keyless option get different fobs with the key bit (for emergency door opening) hidden away, bloody VW cost cutting!!

The key bit is hidden away - you have to press a button to flip it out. I like it a lot more than all those credit card style crap fobs you get with the French cars.

Doesn't seem like a cost cut to me.

To be fair, it does smack of cost cutting a bit.
Any keyless car I've had has had the fob he describes, completely different from the non-keyless cars with an emergency key you unclip and pull out.
I agree those card style keys are a pain, we've had them in Renaults.
Sometimes literally a pain when you sit down and they catch you awkwardly....

The key for our i3 is like this, and it doesn't even have the "comfort access" option, so you still have to press the remote to open it, but it does have a start button, the actual key is hidden inside for emergency door opening (you wouldn't it was there unless you looked), same with friend Audi's etc.

TBH I am probably going to disable the keyless entry with OBDEleven, needing to remember to keep the keys in a Faraday pouch\box when in the house to stop the car being pinched will get old quickly, plus they don't auto lock when you walk away from them (like Renault's, Nissans and a few others), plus I find the welcome headlights very handy at night when pressing the unlock, and in the summer I always put the windows down via the fob when walking towards the car, I might as well just set to act the same as our i3 does, I do like a start button though!

Nissans don't auto-lock when you walk away, only Renaults.
When we had a Juke and Captur at the same time my wife would walk away from the Juke, leaving it unlocked.

As I've said in another thread about anti-theft, I'm wary of doing 'too much' to secure a car.
I'd rather wake up to my car having been scanned and gone, than have them breaking into the house to look for keys.
I will always do what's required for insurance to pay out, no more.

Nissans don't? Interesting especially as they and Renaults are just the same cars underneath now, I am sure I have heard of other makes that do.

I hear you about making things too hard to steal a car, still I know some insurance companies have been difficult with people when their keyless entry cars have been stolen, I would like to think a Polo (even a GTi) wouldn't be worth the risk of breaking in to an occupied house, which has security lights, secure doors, a dog, and the house is obviously alarmed, it's not a Golf R\RS3\BMW M4 etc, plus I just don't see the point in it if I have to touch a certain place on the handle to lock it, I close a car door by pushing on the window frame and just walk away and press the lock button on the fob in my pocket, seems a backwards step to have to stop and touch the door handle to get it to lock.

Renault was walk-away to lock, press button on door handle to unlock.
The walk-away lock is great, all keyless cars should do it. 8)
The Juke was door handle button to lock and unlock.

Yeah if the VW keyless did that I would only disable the keyless unlocking part (it is 2 different modules you disable with OBDEleven) so it auto locked but required a button press on the remote to unlock.

Is it possible to disable only the Keyless Entry part? Leaving the push to start keyless.

Yes, if you have OBDEleven or Carista you can tell it that it doesn't have the modules for keyless entry, so you have to use the buttons on the remote, but the start button still works as normal,

Thank you for that information! I will strongly consider that when i receive my GTI in 3 months time. I live in an apartment and as such im a bit harder to target in the relay trick.

Nissan's do. We had a juke courtesy car which did this.
