That is the armrest. Had one in my 2010 GTI.
I noted a few weeks ago that the vw website no longer mentioned illuminated sills when previously it had.

That is definitely the arm rest.

S_94: the top flips up for storage, and the pad on top extends forward, over the hand brake lever when you pull it out.

Unless they've changed the design, the top isn't ratchetable for height adjustment like the Golf's.

I’ve got the 2019 model and the only difference on the new arm rest is the two USB ports behind it for rear passengers. It’s not on a ratchet system, but as you say, it does slide forward.

Thanks guys!

Happy to say nothing has been missed then.

I'll give that a go now (extending it), was fiddling around but didn't really know what I was doing.

Thanks for the "details" Nora.

Is there any problem with a slight delay between obtaining the car and getting it detailed?

Any detailer would prefer it as new as possible, untouched by the guy at the dealership who washes the cars. As it’s less likely to be scratched etc. But it’s not uncommon for cars with >1000 miles on them and be filthy to receive a new car prep. This might cause extra work for the detailer and reflect in the overall cost of the job.
In my case due to the long lead time for appointments with the detailer, I was trying to second guess when the car would be delivered after I received notification of the build week at the beginning of the year, to enable me to find a suitable date for detailing.
With the estimated 7 weeks between build and delivery that was mentioned by those who received their cars prior to the emissions changes. I guessed that the car would be delivered either the end of April or early May, which turned out to be correct (It was actually built W/C 4/3 instead of W/C 11/3). So it arrived a week earlier than expected. This is why I didn’t get it today and will get it next Saturday

I had to cancel my detailer a couple if times due to the car not being delivered. The car is now at the dealership but detailer can’t do it until Friday. I guess a few more days waiting (my wife) won’t matter.
Has anyone on here got a blue GTI from Swindon? I’m sure that was on the video they sent me of mine.

Is the radio/media console screen supposed to come on automatically when the car starts? Or is it normal to manually use the power button to get it on?

If you didn't turn it off manually when turning the ignition off and exiting the car then it will come on automatically when you turn the ignition on.

Ceramic coating and new car prep. Luckily they have a storage unit on the industrial estate where there is more space

VW dealer called me today to say that my car was on a vessel from Emden.
Odd though because I thought that I had
already established on Friday that it had arrived on another ship that crossed.
Ah well, it is here now and had arrived on the Paglia which is now leaving the UK.
Not long now.

Well done.
Mine due in Emden today, a day late after stopping off at Antwerp.
Wasn't going to look but I did. [emoji6]

Re “ Detailing”
My dealer polished mine before delivery and after about a week I put some decent polish on the car in August last year( pre WLTP delivery). I also put Rain X on the side glass and did a seat treatment. My ( wife's) car sits outside all the time and apart from an infrequent wash does not get any special treatment.
After three weeks we decided to wash it a few days ago, especially the wheels which were filthy. The red calipers on the brakes are tricky to clean as you need to move the car slightly to get to all of them properly.
I then gave it a polish with Meguiars Next Gen wax and to be honest the car looks like new, the two more difficult challenges being a few tiny black tar spots on the panels and soot around the end of the exhausts . We do a lot of short runs so maybe that is why they were black? That took a bit of effort as I am 72 so find it hard to reach down or lay down to do it! I have sent off for some chrome cleaner to finish the shiny ends better.
So in my ‘ umble opinion I would not bother with expensive detailing , a wax every so often is perfectly adequate, and as I say the car looks as it did when new( photo attached) .Despite a winter outside the Brescias have no visible corrosion, but we have not done much driving with salt on the roads. Total mileage now is only 3500 miles.
MPG around town is about 33 and a long run under 70 mph can give up to 50 mpg, dropping to 45 mpg at just over 70 average.
My dealer has only just got another red GTi in the showroom, but not a plus, so as the Little Britain phrase goes ...” We own the only Gti Plus in the Village” .
Actually in the South Lakes area where we live I have not seen another one yet :D
