What MPG are owners getting in the real world?

12.5 mile commute to work this morning with the car in Eco mode, I got 35MPG. On the way home I got 33MPG.

Quite a bit of stop-starting due to the amount of traffic. Only today hit 100 miles so very early days.

Your commute sounds a lot like mine - 12 miles long.

When it's not the school holidays:-

0-6 miles on 30 and 50 mph roads with very little congestion.

Miles 6-8 on nightmarish stop-start traffic, takes about 10 mins to do 2 miles.

Miles 8-10 on a short stretch of motorways - straight up to 80mph, uncontested.

Miles 10-12, 30 to 40mph on pretty uncongested roads.

Mpg in that situation is 33-35mpg between a cold day and a warm day.

During the school holidays when there is less traffic on the road, that nightmare 2 miles becomes free flowing and my commute is 37-38mpg. Drive like a saint on the motorway stretch and you can add 2mpg to the commute.

Motorway journeys, 80mph over 100 miles (Newcastle to York), I see 45mpg. Probably nudging 50mpg if sticking to 70mph on the motorway.

You'll get sick of the dull throttle response in ECO mode very quickly. It won't add more than 2mpg to your journey due to freewheeling gains. I'd rather do without the extra 2mpg.

Seeing as the car is new and I'm trying not to hammer the car would you recommend keeping it in Normal mode? I can definitely see the difference with Eco mode and yeah the response isn't great.

There's no fuel savings in normal vs Sport if the gearbox is running "D" rather than "S" shifts in either mode, you'll just be getting a sharper pedal response in Sport and pressing less for the same output.

I keep mine in individual mode with everything set to Sport except engine noise (set to normal - don't want to overdo the fake noise) and the suspension (set to normal assuming that your roads are as bad as everyone else's).

The gearbox mode defaults to "D" on the next ignition cycle if you have the car set to Sport.

You can cycle between "D" and "S" gearbox modes by pulling back on the gearstick against the spring beyond the "D" position.

Engine in Sport and gearbox in D mode gives you Sport throttle response with sensible change up/down thresholds for reasonable economy when you're not pressing on.

Is there any harm in replicating your settings if the engine is only at 100 miles? Also how do you go about changing the engine noise and suspension? Is that somewhere in the settings?

Sorry for so many questions, still trying to wrap my head around things.

Yes, all those settings are in individual mode - there are 7 or 8 parameters you can change. No harm in having the car running Sport mode while running in, just don't give it full throttle.

I've been getting my 95 up to the giddy heights of 50+ MPG on gentle runs now.
But that's very gentle driving indeed, not at all fun.
The 'blue drive' display definitely works for me, in that the live MPG is large and more 'in your face'
I ignore the driving score and the display in the middle that makes no sense and looks like the large hadron collider.

Thanks again mate. Applied those settings this morning, much better drive compared to Eco. I kept the gearbox in D instead of S though. Did switch to S once to overtake someone, that was nice!

Polo GTI - 42mpg and 44mpg on 2 100mile runs. Car is brand new with <300miles on the clock so looking forward to see if that improves.

To put that in context, assuming you did those miles mainly on the motorway, what was your preferred cruising speed?

I've done Newcastle to York before and averaged 45mpg cruising at 80mph in my GTI+. If I'd stuck to 70, I'm guessing it would've been 49/50mpg.

Average around the doors for me is 33mpg.

My 95 did 74mpg on my 32 mile commute. Half the journey is A roads and the other half motorway on which I did slow lane all the way.
