I’m not intending to replace the space saver, just supplement it.
The thought of being of being able to have the option of a full size tyre while I’m far from home is a bonus to me

Nora wrote: Thu May 09, 2019 11:06 am I suspect the best thing you can do with the stock tyres is get used to the car, have some fun, and wear them out, then fit P4’s. My next course of action is probably get a spare rim (Brescia or other) and fit it with a P4, as I detest space saver tyres, and won’t consider driving on the continent without a full size spare tyre.
If I do manage to source steel rims I can’t decide if I should look for 17” or 18” rims and I haven’t really looked into the availability of winter tyres in those sizes
With the battery located in the spare wheel well in the GTI/GTI+ and the space saver stored on top of the battery, is there room for a full size spare to fit between the battery and the underside of the boot floor?
Nope! There's only about 20mm between the top of the space saver and the underside of the false bottom boot floor in its upper position.
It might fit if that tray with tools are taken out ... but try to change tyre without jack and other tools :D Space saver is good enough for me.

Dunno if I posted this here either, but one fine day I found out 'the hard way' what one does when one is unfortunate to get 2 punctures in the middle of nowhere. By 'middle of nowhere' I mean the beautiful Scottish Highlands: no phone signal, no call boxes, no traffic, no houses, in fact not a living soul for a 25 mile radius. Gulp. What one does is to change one wheel then drive for 20 or so miles at 10mph, thereby destroying the other tyre, until one finally gets a phone signal then calls the RAC, who one gives praise and thanks to when the nice man arrives. I've been told the 'bottle of goo' emergency puncture repair works ok but I've also been told they don't but yeah, I'd always want a jack and spare wheel and some kind of recovery service membership. Funny postscipt was explaining to the nice, but not overly bright, person on the phone (car was on PCP tyres included) why I had 2 damaged tyres. I explained it was "because both tyres went down", which seemed to satisfy them....

Has your dealer confirmed the build date or have you had the “in transit” notification? My build week also got confirmed on 28th of March for BW18 (although confusingly it said BW18 06/05) but not had the notification yet. I know the tracker is flakey to say the least, and I’m going to the dealer on Saturday so i’ll check with them then but just wondered where your update came from.

"I know the tracker is flakey to say the least.."
No, it is simply not being used at their end.
There seems to have been a turning point when people stopped getting tracker updates or even notifications.

My dealer confirmed yesterday that the car has now been built, the tracker app hasn’t changed from build week confirmed, the app is totally unreliable.

Cheers, that’s what I thought. I guess I’ll get an update when I go in tomorrow then. Let me know if you hear what ship yours gets on. Fingers crossed mine will be on the same.

The tracker is totally useless. mines been sat at "in transit" for 10 weeks. My dealer emailed me 2 days ago to confirm my car is in UK port and I should bring in my retention doc for private plates to be assigned to vehicle. The useless tracker still says "in transit" I suppose technically it is but why does the tracker not say "arrived in the UK" Totally unreliable and as much use as a chocolate tea pot

How did we manage before VW introduced their utterly useless tracker?

The salesman I dealt with when I ordered my mk6 Golf GTD in 2010/2011 used to give me an update at every two weeks (sometimes more frequently) from about 6-8 weeks after placing the order. I never needed a tracker, the updates from the salesman were accurate, and he always responded promptly to any queries I had too. A couple of follow up calls too after I’d taken delivery to make sure everything was OK.

Sadly, I didn’t get the same service with my current car.

Great customer service IMO and sort of service all waiting customers should get as a matter of course, without having to rely on a rubbish on-line tracker.

Let's hope! If not then the Morning Chorus is due in on the 14th, and the Morning Cara has recently been to Durban and currently in East London, maybe this could be headed to PE soon. Time will tell I guess.

I would not bother trying to second guess the vessel that will carry your car from PE.
Best thing would be to allow a week, or potentially a little longer, after your proposed build week date and then call the dealer to see if they can tell you which vessel it is on, if any at that point.
Then, when that has dropped off at Emden, another week or two wait and call the dealer to find out which vessel it got onto for shipping to the UK.
Unless of course, guessing games are your thing.

Agree 100% I been using same dealership in Wycombe for years. The service used to be fantastic. I have noticed it steadily go down hill each time I come in to buy new car. This last experience has been the worse and honestly made me now think about coming back next time I replace this car.
