It's amazing how *slow* you actually go -- and the roads weren't that busy this afternoon:

although I'm not convinced of the accuracy of this. Don't remember all this stop-start stuff. I'll need to explore further. Moving averages, here we come!!

It can also log latitudes and lonitudes, and a third party app converts them for importing into autoroute maps...

This could be a really interesting tool. Just need to work out how to get the speed camera locations onto it now... Then, once I've got the speed readings confirmed, I'll be calibrating the speedo -- it'd be interesting to see just how accurate it actually is..

dxg, long time!.... Welcome to the world of TomTom

I've been spending most of my time at work recently playing with an XDA and TomTom and I've found some pretty interesting "add-ons" for TomTom, including the Speed Camera alert one. I'll e-mail it to you tomorrow if you want..?

rooboy - I'll have a look at those places - they sound interesting.

Got it "properly" installed this lunchtime. Bought an RJ11 extension cable from Maplins and ran it down the passenger sill to the boot. The GPS unit's now sitting on one of the plastic bits at the side of the parcel shelf and working just fine (can see about seven satelites).

I've got the unit itself sitting on top of the ashtray - where's it's pretty solid - wedged btwn between the ciggie light plug, with the cable round the gearstick and the stylus sticking up from the ciggie "holder" hole-thingie on the other side.

Bit worried about using the suction cup on the windscreen. Was messing about with it at home last night and stuck it to the fridge door. Could I get it off? Could I b...

That's what I paid - from amazon.

Was a bit miffed, though. Bought what I thought was the whole thing for Â£150 to start with. The description read "works with x, y and z pda", so I assumed it would come with all the cables you'd require.

Nope - another 50 quid to get the kit for my specific PDA. Held the whole experiment up by another three days - which was the main annoyance.

I had to use this thing for "real" for the first time yesterday. Had to get from Loughborough to Swindon. My "normal" route would have been all the way down the M1, a bit of the M25, then back out the M4. Long, boring, but simple to remember.

Instead, I though I'd let tomtom do its thing. Took me out past the bottom edge of Coventry, out to the M40 - which was all fine as I know that part of the country reasonably well. Then, it started heading me off in the unknown. Now bear in mind I *had* to get there by 4pm, I was placing a fair bit of faith in this little device.

It worked flawlessly. Tape cassette convertor thing into the stereo, the PDA playing mp3s in the background, while tomtom ran in the foreground. The perfect setup!

Took me down the a429 - which it turns out is a wonderful little road.

Hardly any straights, lots of hills, reasonably good lines of sight so plently of overtaking opportunities (only marred by the high proportion of "no overtaking" lines and the odd artic). People seemed be to leaving reasonable gaps in the queues behind tractors, artics, etc. for change, so I managed to work my way up reasonably well in my little 1.4.

Great fun!
