My 2p worth....

If you want to keep your car, get Autowatch Ghost fitted.

Disklok = visual deterrent only. Most owners stupidly keep the key with the car key.

Home security, make as secure as you can, but no matter how secure it is, if they want it they’ll break in.

My car was on the driveway last year, 4 balaclava clad males kicked their way through locked iron gates, realised they couldn’t snap the locks (as high spec locks fitted), so put the glass through in the patio door. Alarm internal siren and keypad ripped off the wall. Entire house search for hidden keys, car and disklok in different places. Found keys, back out to the car, disklok off chucked on the grass, tried to start the car. Couldn’t due to AWG. All this in 8 minutes.

So if you want to keep your car then get AWG or similar.

My house is probably more secure than most, locked iron side gates, 3 star anti snap locks, sash jammers, alarm, dog.

AWG was only thing stopping my car from being taken.

In the situation of a group of tooled up burglars forcing their way into the house for the car keys, I'd rather they got the car keys and got on their way with the car than come back in frustration and threaten the family for the means to disable the AWG.

I can't imagine anyone going to that much trouble for a Polo GTI, even in the car crime hot spots of Coventry, Birmingham and London (where all the Holf Rs and S3s seem to disappear). At the end of the day, it's a Polo, not a hyper hatch or supercar.

I wouldn't want a "tainted" car back - if it gets stolen or a family member gets maimed/injured for it, I'd rather they write it off, I wouldn't want it back.

Insurance will replace a car, it won't replace a family member.

This wasn’t for a Polo.

I can see your point and it is of concern. However this very rarely happens. Most burglars are 8 stone wet through teens who would not come back - not saying all are like this.

However, the AWG buys you enough time to call the police. Also, car thefts are not limited to burglaries at home. Cars are stolen from home, car parks, places of work etc.

I try to put my AWG into service mode (if I remember), so the car will start and can be driven off. Although once driven above a certain speed for a few minutes the ghost re-arms itself and won’t restart.

Not sure what image the Polo GTI have, is it a desirable car for the twokers?

Considering your previous experience with a car that wasn't a Polo (presuming something much hotter) first thing I would do is move to an area less affected by car crime -from your description, they sounded like pros.

All the house security was for nothing because they were determined pros and perhaps your house alarm seemed a bit poor, having been defeated by someone ripping the key pad and siren off a wall.

A Disklok is a good visual deterrent, it'll let the opportunist thief know upfront that it's going to be more difficult for them than just intercepting the keyless signal.

I’d also not want my car back if it was stolen and recovered. It’s unlikely to have been treated with much mechanical sympathy while in the hands of the perpetrators - probably ragged to within an inch of its life. I’d also not risk a life for the sake of a car. I’ve not seen too many reports of Polo GTI’s being stolen - I can remember one or two forum members with the previous generation car posting that they’d have had a window on their car broken; whether in an attempt to steal the car or contents, I don’t know.

No, the Polo GTI isn’t a supercar, but then neither is the Ford Fiesta ST, and that car seems to be particularly prone to theft. Maybe weak security, but even where owners have made it more difficult for a would be thief, cars have been stolen. Seems that quite a few ST’s are stolen and broken up for parts, so a car doesn’t have be a supercar or a hyper hatch to be a target.

Decent home security is certainly worth having. Get GAP insurance too, so you don’t get left out of pocket by a potentially low claim settlement by a motor insurer if your car is written off or stolen and not recovered.

Fiesta STs are being stolen by convenience - easily intercepted keyless signals, I don't know of anyone getting burgled for their ST. Showering the car with micro dots might help identify parts from broken up cars if it's not to expensive to implement - Jaguar trialled this about 10 years ago for the XK series, not sure if they ever properly rolled it out.

Someone was killed on a street in South Manchester where a friend lives for his Audi S3. It's just a car. I'll do the basics but not prepared for anyone to get hurt over it!

Exactly it's just car. Don't take me wrong. I would be mad if someone stole it but I have insurance for that reason.
