Whining noise thinking it is my turbo help?

Post by BrandonH »

I have recently had my 1.8 polo gti remapped stage 1 it is running around 240bhp just put in a performance clutch and bearing etc but now i hear a whining noise even at low revs im thinking its the turbo on the way out you can hear it most when i have it in 3rd at about 1000rpm and then put my foot flat to floor im a newbie when coming to technical stuff on the car would i need an upgrade if so what can i upgrade to? And would i need anything extra like another map and how much would it roughly be? Any help would be a massive help only had the car 4 months ive booked it at a vw specialist for a health check apart from this i absolutely love the car.

I have to confess that I'm no technician, but I'm not sure why it would be louder in 3rd gear compared to other gears if it was the turbo. Have you noticed smoked out of the exhaust which would be an indication of impending turbo failure?
The gearbox and running gear should be more than adequate for a stage one remap so hopefully it won't be any of the shafts in the gearbox itself - I can't thing of anymore upgrades that you should look at.
Try not to worry until the vw specialist has had a look.

I would be interested to know the outcome as my car is a few days from the end of the warranty period and I'm looking at a stage 1 remap

Hope you get it sorted and its not too expensive

Got in it this morning and its very loud when its cold but the noise seems to go away after 3000rpm but yeah when i got it remapped my clutch started to slip but i think the clutch was on its way out anyway due to the previous owner so yeah hopefully with the warranty i got from the car they could replace the turbo just fingers crossed they dont find out its mapped lol

Hum, good luck with your upgrade stage 1 not being detected, I think that any power train issues being resolved with a warranty would start for checking for evidence of a non factory engine ECU software, in VW Group world, I think a flag gets set which can be detected and logged with VW Group mothership, but you might be lucky.

Yeah i got it from evans halshaw which is a nissan dealer so hopefully they wont check but probably will but taking it to a specialist first so they can identify the problem then i can take it to evan halshaw and say a specialist said it was this what was the problem and hopefully theyll just fix it

I'd think that they would put it out to maybe a VW dealer to get it sorted, they will not have the knowledge to fix this quickly I'd guess.

Yes VCDS will detect ECU updates. Found this out when I had an ECU re-flashed by the VW dealership to sort a fault. A flag count shows how many updates completed because they had to do this twice. So good luck!

Update - Having thought they would detect my remap i had it put back to standard and luckily they did not detect it and the turbo had broke and the car was struggling to start and this was because all the parts what the oil passes through had failed also but all will be fixed under warranty and have got a refund for the remap as it was that what had broke the car so i feel very lucky but advice for anyone wanting to get it remapped always go for a safe re map over power and make sure they calibrate the map to the car as this company (Celtic Tuning) did not do this. I will be going to Reevo/MRC i know its more expensive but they are specialists so ive heard. Thanks for the replies guys.

Is it wise to post this in a publicly accessible forum?

Maybe a difficult question to say YES or NO to, if the re-mapper had done a proper job(whatever that means), then the car's engine should have been able to handle this, maybe an engine health check is needed before applying a performance re-map?

I was referring to VW and the use of the warranty for this….

There was a check before this was done and everything was fine with the car and it wasn't a warranty from VW it was from the place i bought it from but i was told by a tuner that when a remap is done they should calibrate the re map to the car like pressure etc but it wasn't i dont really know much about it just going off what i have been told. And it maybe not be wise but the work had been done now and i doubt someone will go tell them as they dont know where i got it from
