Depressed...:'-(

Post by Sugar Muppet »

Just thought i'd have a general moan. Also to appologise for not being at the Edinburgh Polo meet at the weekend - bad week.

Started University on Monday. Dragging myself out of bed at 5.30 to get the bus (no way i am leaving my baby parked in edinbrugh all day, or risking the scary rush hour). The bus was late (and has been every day since). So my 15 minute walk at the other end has become a 5 minute run! all up hill to add insult to injury.

uni is s**t. I did my first year at Plymouth university and came back up for love. Big mistake me thinks. Going straight into the second year everyone knows each other, hardly met a soul. and the work is nothing like the first year at plymouth so 1 week in and im struggling all ready.

Working in a shop to try and make some money which takes up some nights and weekends. Feel like i have no life and its only been 1 week. The best bit is i don't even think i want to do the course - accountancy. Was kind of pushed into it. Don't have a clue what to do.

Sorry for going on but am in library very bored and very upset.

On the other hand my car is looking very pretty, only thing that makes me smile! Although now all my money will go on books and travelling and my car will have to do without any more mods for a while.

Also, while i'm here - iv got raging cold - keep getting dirty looks in lectures cos im coughing so much! tried all the usual remedies lemsips etc but nothing seems to work - any ideas?

thanks for listening to my rant. xxx

5:30am

Sounds like you're having a rough time! I felt the same about my A-level physics not long after starting the course. As it happens I wasn't cut out to study physics, kept failing the module exams, which kinda defeats the object, so I dropped it. Was really depressing at times though, especially when the exam results came through after each module!

As its only a week into the semester, what about heading back down to Plymouth and rejoining the course there? Or, worst case scenario, dropping out and taking 12 months out to (a) save a bit of cash thru part-time/full-time work, and (b) decide whether or not you want to actually go through with it and finish the degree you're part way thru?

As for the cold... Covonia for the cough - tastes like **** (although some people actually like the taste, I can't stand it!) but works a treat. Sudafed for the whole blocked sinuses (sp?) business. Works for me anyways. Bleah. Colds suck :(

Not much help I know, but at least in a few days you won't have a cold any more

Still in library - next lecture at 3. Can't just nip home!!

Thanks for your reply. put a smile on my face.

After my year at plymouth i took a year out as i was too late to join edinburgh last year. So i can't really take another year out or i will be collecting my pension before i have repaid my loan!

As much as i would love to head back to plymouth i do really love my man and couldn't bear to be away from him, plus parking at plymouth us a bugger so couldn't take my car!!!!!!!

Off to find a chemist for Covonia.

Thanks again. Its amazing how a little post can make you day! (Forgot one more tale of woe - left my phone on the bus last thursday so can't even moan to my mummy or boyfriend!!!!!!!) Life sucks.

Edinburgh is a fantastic place to be a student. Just wait until you've met a few people and have been down the Grassmarket a few times. You'll soon want to stay there. Just give it time.

I know how you feel.. the only advice I can give is not to make any major decisions about your uni / course until you've given yourself a month or two to get settled in and get used to life back in edinburgh. It won't be long before you start actually meeting people and getting properly settled, and things will suddenly start looking up :)

I feel for you, seriously. I know how stressful this stuff can be. Im starting Loughborough Uni on friday(move into halls on thursday). Only problem is, the only accommodation that was availabe was shared bedroom halls. Yes thats right 2 beds in 1 room! The accommodation off messed me about so much and this was their only offer to me after 4 weeks of haggling. Im not one of these stuck up people who has to have everything perfect, but I do appreciate sleeping and chilling in my own room and by myself, unless I invite a friend over. Knowing my luck I will not get on with the person in my room, but then again why should I have to? But then you have to see them everytime u wake up! Its doing my head in and I feel like quiting before Ive even moved into my halls or started my course!

stick with it. you're bound to be feeling down at the moment, as you say other people know each other & you're the new person. Having a bad cold will make you feel twice as bad as well.

You'll make friends soon enough without a doubt as you sound like a social kind of person. Also, the 2nd year at any uni is always a lot harder than the 1st year.

First year is more about settling in, having a good time & for tutors to see who is up to the course & who isn't. 2nd & 3rd years are when you really do your work. I dont know about your course but when I was at uni the first year didn't even count towards the final mark, it was only the work you did in the 2nd & 3rd years that went towards your degree.

Are you living back with your parents again? If so I'd move out into a rented place with other students near the uni. You're missing on half the point of uni if you're living at home miles away from all the other students. You wont have to get up at such a silly time either then.

it is a total cockbite, going into uni (or anywhere), spesh when everyone seems to know each other. the first-week blues can hit awful hard (as well as the final-month...) :(

particularly if the weather is bobbins and your timetable sucks eggs.

Try to spread yourself around a bit and get to know people, even if its through house/flat/hall/roommates, or joining a club. Can be tricky I know too well, but make the leap. I both moved into a house where everyone was 3rd year continuing from living together the year before (someone left), and joined what seemed to be a pretty tight-knit cliquey diving club at the start of my 2nd year. Ended up getting on well with pretty much everyone in weeks, and i'm no social wonderboy at all. Folk can be surprisingly friendly and open to the "new kid" so long as you're not horrible to them!
(and in the 3rd year i somehow wound up getting to know a lot of fairly unhinged and unwashed folk in the anime club rather too well, after going along because a free projector-screening of some classic ani films was flyered all over the place - less said about that TOO easy to get friendly experience the better... let it be a warning, dont get too desperate and beware of those who are!)

I would say something here about the friendly atmosphere of edinbro, but as i saw it for 3 days in festy season it probably isnt representative.

Chin up kid... you don't wanna hear this of course... but there's a whole 9 months to get thru... dont mope just yet as a couple weeks is no representative sample of a place :( get onto your students union right away and see if they have a free student counsellor or anyone, if it's all too much.

Why are you on such a punishing schedule by the way? Even things as they are now in this nation, uni life should be giving you more opportunity for rolling in at 5am* than getting up at that time.. sounds dreggy awful.

And, ignore any fool who's giving you evil looks because of the fresher's flu (lots of people from different places together = lots of new varieties of common cold you havent immunity to for you to catch). Everyone gets a cough or cold from time to time. Just make as if they're not there. If you listen out you may find you're certainly not the only one hacking away.
It'll be your turn to give all the uncaring sods dirty - and knowing - looks when it comes back round to their turn to get ill. With any luck they'll get the same spawned-from-the-devils-arse viral throat infection i had at the start of ALL THREE YEARS which has no remedy but patience, and so many ibuprofen and strepsils that you start to trip out.

Was in bad shape first night in hall, just in pieces, really didnt want to be there, worried i'd picked a course that i'd hate, stuck in grotty prison-like room in a town that p1sses rain..... til the more gregarious neighbours banged on the door and dragged me, reluctantly, to the bar. A few conversations and a couple beers later and it didnt seem so bad. First week was still a bind, but it got better.
And in the final month it was clear the course wasnt really lighting my fire any more, and the project was going to hell, ready to just quit and work for maccy D's... made it through alive however.

* particularly that punk/goth club down on...... er..... its one of those roads which has another road built 20ft up across it.... sorry, i was drunk! But it's open til either 3 or 5 in the morning, depending on the "night"
