Re: dash cam recommendation
Thinkware F770 (or a newer model). Had one in my Golf R for 3 years, then transferred it to my Polo GTI+. 1080P front and back, parking monitoring and car battery management built in, overheat protection, excellent clarity at night/poor light conditions.
I had one in the wife's Audi A1 for 3 years also, but haven't been arsed to fit it in her GTI+ yet.
The Golf did have a Blackvue 650 before the F770, but it fried itself (overhearing) on a moderately cool day, less than a week into ownership.

Re: dash cam recommendation
I have these in my Polo's, no problems in the 8-9 months I have had them, good picture and easy to set up yourself if not hardwiring them in

Have a look at this guys site, he does tests on most things on entertainment and for the car. He gets things sent to him, but he's not biased in any way.

Re: dash cam recommendation
My problem with dashcams is how most of them look awful and so obviously tacked on. I wish more manufacturers did what Citroen and Tesla do and fit one in the factory! Especially when so many cars now have cameras mounted up by the rear view mirror anyway for lane assist (although admittedly not the Polo).
I have seen some which fit into a sort of clip on unit that goes around the factory light/rain sensor, but as my car has climate control, there's a humidity sensor in there too and I'd not want to block it off. I'm wondering if I could bodge one into the larger plastic surround that cars with auto high-beam use for that sensor/camera thingy.

Re: dash cam recommendation
I'm sure that I've read in a posting (in which motoring forum, ??), where someone outside UK did this with a Golf, though I can't remember how many other sensors were already in the mirror housing.
I'm guessing it was in this Polo forum - or an Audi forum, sorry no more clues!

Re: dash cam recommendation
I have the Nextbase 522GW hardwired to my Polo with the rear camera install.
Sadly last Friday, 3 months into owning my GTI+ the dashcam paid for itself when a lorry on the M25 rolled back into my car.
That said I have been having a lot of trouble with the 522GW, sometimes it freezes and I only notice when I look up and it isn't filming. I have tried everything from formatting the memory card to factory resets. Generally I think the Nextbase dash cams are of poor build quality with dodgy software.

You can also check out the Street Guardian SGGCX2PRO. It will probably satisfy your needs.
