What is this under driver seat?

I've been cleaning my one year old GTI yesterday and noticed this half cut out rectangular shape under my drivers seat. This is my first time seeing this and i own the car for a year. It just had its first service done 2 weeks ago.
Is this normal?

Quite a few of the cars I’ve owned in the past had a similar flap in the carpet - either under the driver’s seat or beside it. Some had a small plastic hinged cover that was fitted into the carpet. On those cars, the car’s VIN (vehicle identification number) was stamped into the floor pan, and that flap in the carpet was the means of accessing it.

From your picture, it looks as if the flap is fixed on the left hand side, so you should be able to lift up the narrow end (right hand side of the flap in your picture) and have a look to see if it it is in fact a cover for the car’s VIN.

If I try to lift the flap up on any side, i lift up whole carpet, as the flap is still attached to the carpet on all sides.
Well, it seems like this isnt nothing out of the ordinary then, thank you for giving me some peace of mind.

Maybe a pre cut cable route in case you had heated seats ?

Or cut outs for electrically adjusting seats or under seat storage drawers like the Holf used to get?

As someone that has the drivers seat 2 notches from the back of the rails - I do dislike seeing the perforated cut outs and wish the VW mats were long enough to cover them.
