I am hoping someone can assist please as I have an issue with buying the correct front brake pads and more importantly, the brake pad fitting clips / kits

Some of like small brackets and others are like a bent wire that must tension something

My brakes are excellent but the drivers side has been rattling for over a year and when I last looked there was no clip or bracket fitted so presuming pads are free to rattle.

Can find anything with an accurate part number for pads or kit but I am sure GSF or Eurocarparts could supply but they are vague in advising and they feel there is more than one option for my car

Any help much appreciated

I have a 1.2 2002 Polo E and it has 256mm front discs. To be sure of yours just quickly take off a wheel and measure directly across a disc. On ECP when I bought mine I selected the 256mm discs and when selecting pads if you go onto the fitment detail it should say what size disc it fits. If your still unsure just go directly to the manufacturers website which is what I did for pagid. As for retaining hardware mine were just clips riveted on the backside of the pads that would clip into the piston and the calliper.

The bent wire you describe seems not to fit the description of front brake pads. The rear of front brake pads use spring steel clips to reduce rattle/squeal. The bent wire you describe sounds more like rear brake pads, which use an inverted T shape clip with a loop at the top for tension - also to stop rattle/squeal.

Do you know what braking system you have and what the trim is (S, SE, Twist etc)? Should say on the master cylinder who made the braking system unless it has been replaced. For example mine is ATE. Regarding the clip I have never seen that myself either.

Edit: engine power output may also help in finding right pads

I need to take wheel off and see whats fitted on the side that isn't rattling to know what I need and will also check the master cylinder for makes as suggested.

I was just hoping to pick a set of pads up etc and just fit them but had no idea until now that there are variations :0

Eurocarparts couldn't help despite giving them my car reg and they asked me to ask main dealer for the part numbers for my car and then they could sort me out :0

Sadly that is the case for most service parts on these cars. Best thing to do is like you said have a look at what you already have and match it up. Details that can help you are model year, engine size, power output and trim level.

OK, so didn't get a chance to take wheel off but it would appear that I have an ATE brake master cylinder so does that narrow what I need down?

The car is a 2004 1.2 12v model, I think was an S model if I remember

After a bit of digging it seems the parts you linked form GSF were for a 1.4. You probably have the same braking system on yours as I do on mine being a 1.2 12V and the ATE master cylinder. If that’s the case then it’s 256mm front discs and the retaining hardware is just clips riveted to the pad backing plate that clip firmly into the piston and calliper as mentioned before. If you have alloys you should be able to see the calliper and outside pad. Should be able to see if it has the style of retaining hardware that clips in.

If you’re still unsure just pop the wheel off when you get the chance as you’ll be able to get a much better look.

Relatively straightforward job to replace, just need something to push the piston back, 7 or 9mm hex socket (can’t remember which size exactly) for the calliper pins, Phillips and a flat head a screw driver and I think a 10mm for the bleed nipple. The calliper pins are very easy to strip the threads so don’t put too much torque on them.

The pins will have rubber boots and a cap covering them only need to take the end caps off. They will only unscrew so far. After they stop, there’s a gap in the calliper where the pins hold onto the bracket I believe were you can use a flat head screw driver to catch the threads and push the pins out enough for you to get a hold of. Then the whole calliper should come off with the pads attached just don’t let it hang by the brake line. After removing the pads form the calliper I find you can hook the calliper onto the spring. Pretty sure you have to take the piston side pad out first but if they’re worn down enough it probably won’t matter which side comes out first.

Thanks to all for advice. Fitted a set of ATE pads and very pleased.

The rattle I had was that on one of the old pads, the retaining bracket had fallen off and so the outer pad had nothing to hold it in place and was allowed to move around.

All sorted now and nice and quiet and the ATE pads have a nice braking feel to then whereas the old pads tending to bite
