Servicing / timing belt cost -2015 1.2 TSI

Hi

Getting the car serviced by a VW Indy specialist in a few weeks, inc timing belt changed.

I’ve asked for a full service to be done as I’m not sure what VW serviced last year just before we bought the car.

Car is a 2015 1.2 TSI, around 33k miles.

Full service inc oil, oil filter,air filter, pollen filter, fuel filter, spark plugs full vehicle check and report is £210 + vat. Full timing belt kit is £350 + vat. £672 inc vat in total.

Sound ok?

No point in taking that way of thinking, this will be new territory for most people with these 1.2TSI 16V engines, I don't know the answer yet.

Is it the same with the 1.0 engine variant too? I’ve read a few articles suggesting that these belts were suppose the be lifetime but VW UK only are suggesting 5 years for a replacement.

Not an immediate issue for us as the car is only 3.5years old so we have time to sit it out for a bit.

Chains are lifetime, belts will always be a serviceable item.

Slider.. VW made a big thing about the belts on the new 1.0 engine being lifetime. Lots of stories on google about VW UK saying it has to be changed on 5 years but other VAG cars like Skoda UK saying it is 160k or lifetime... and non UK VAG saying it is lifetime.

I.e. VWUK seem to be going against everyone else.

I do agree it should be a serviceable item but five years with very low mileage for a ‘lifetime’ belt seems harsh when the cost to replace is so high.

I think RUM was suggesting that because these engines are still relatively new they are waiting to see if the service recommendations change with more real experience of how the belts are performing over time. I think. :D

The cost of replacing the belt is nothing compared to the cost if the belt snaps.

£400 once every 5 years is not a lot.

I’m getting it done along with a full service as I’m not sure what exactly was changed when VW serviced the car when we picked it up. We bought this car for our daughter, VW’s online service history is useless....bring back the book !!

None of our VW’s will be going anywhere near a VW dealer for servicing - they are rubbish

I think there are lots of things that could potentially break (gearbox etc) out of warranty but are unlikely. Personally I think a car with 20k miles on it is too early for a timing belt change even after 5 years. Especially when VAG AG do not agree with VW UK.

Also £672 for a polo service at an Indy after years and 32k miles strikes me as quite expensive. More expensive than getting a Porsche Boxster serviced! Not having a go.. just an observation that these wee cars are quite costly to maintain. We also have a Mini for our other daughter and that’s much cheaper to maintain for what is arguably a better car (subjective I admit!).

Anyway... each to their own... stay safe :D

Again, only costing that much due to the timing belt. The rubber deteriorates overtime, mileage is pretty much irrelevant.

£210 for a full service (all filters, oil and plugs is cheap).

If you choose to take your chance and not replace the cam belt I hope it pays off.

Mini = better car - not sure if I’m honest. I had one before my Golf R. Awful thing it was.

One thing to consider is, with VW Group, initially these cam belts replacement period was 4 years or X miles, and mainly it was the tensioner/roller/idler that failed first if left and that wrecked the belt and so the engine, for car built maybe after 2006 the cam belt period was moved out to 5 years or Y miles probably due to parts being deleted and other revised. When the 1.2TSI 16V engine came along it came with a different type of cam belt, and this made it, due to improved/changed materials a "life long" item - what that was meant to mean was that after maybe 5 years, the belt cover should be removed and the belt checked along its entire length, and only then was the workshop meant to raise the issue of "it will need a new cam belt soon" with the owner.

Now, due to me being slightly diligent about these potentially engine wrecking things, I remove the belt cover round about service time, not just to see if the belt is still looking okay, but more importantly to make sure that the variable timing inlet pulley has not started to fall apart as this did happen to some early cars.

So, I'll continue to monitor the belt on my wife's August 2015 Polo with the 1.2TSI 16V 110PS engine and between 6 and 8 year point I will get that belt replaced, by doing that I should only need to replace it once in its life time in our ownership - I found the need to replace the cam belt on her previous 2002 VW Polo 1.4 16V 75PS twice in its 13 years 105K miles, same with my daughter's late 2009 SEAT Ibiza 1.4 16V 86PS.

But as always, each to their own way of doing things and I'd agree that VW UK's recommendation will be that it needs replacing at 5 years or Z miles - and that is not the official VW AG recommendation, just what VW UK who is owned by VW AG is saying to dealers to let them generate enough cash through their workshops.
