Car servicing in lockdown

Post by JohnF »

Has anyone managed to get their Polo serviced at a main dealer recently? The earliest date I've been given is 27th July for a collect and drop of service, or earlier If I can brave taking it to the the garage.

My dealership reopened this week for other than key workers. Mine goes in later this month. I was asked if I'd like to move it forward but the original date is ok. I'm quite happy walking into the garage.

I think most dealerships whose workshops have been open during lockdown will have been giving priority to the cars of key workers, so there may have been limited appointment slots for routine servicing for other customers, especially if some workshops have been running below capacity if technicians have been off work self-isolating. Many customers will now be looking to get overdue service/maintenance work and MOT’s carried out on their cars, so longer than normal waiting times are likely to be the norm for the next few months.

If a routine service is carried out late on your car because of the impact of Covid-19, VW have said that it won’t invalidate your car’s warranty (assuming your car is under warranty), but you should get your car serviced as soon as it can be done. From VW’s website (Covid-19 FAQ’s)

If I miss my scheduled service due to Covid-19 does this invalidate my warranty?
If your service is carried out late due to disruption caused by COVID-19, the servicing delay will not invalidate your vehicle’s warranty. What’s most important is to get the service done as soon as you can, so please contact your local retailer to make an appointment as soon as possible.

The wife's GTI+ was due itts service on Tuesday, but we'e managed to get it on somewhere slightly inconvenient for next Friday, with a courtesy car.

Although the wife and I are key workers, that hasn't been a consideration. The local dealerships (Lookers Silverlink and Lookers Newcastle, Pulman Sunderland and Pulman Durham) have remained closed and Pulman are opening the Durham branch on Monday. It's the furthest away for me (about 25 miles away) but kind of on the way to work in Teesside. I'd rather go to the Sunderland branch, much closer and less out of the way for my commute.

Wouldn't touch Lookers except under extreme desperation - both branches gave damaged my cars in their care and denied doing it, but photos taken of the car at drop off proved otherwise.

Most dealerships will be champing at the bit to start taking your money again.

I used to buy my cars from lookers preston but would never use their service department. They were forever putting the tyre pressures at random pressures, they once kerbed the wheel on my blue gt when trying to work out why my cruise control kept stopping during use, they never updated our details after we moved no matter how many times we told them to, they can’t do service and recalls same day and so on.

Now I use Inchcape Bolton or corkhills Southport. Both much better and professional.

I also use Inchcape Bolton. Bit of a trek, but I trust their work.
I'm nearly 3 weeks overdue my first service, and booked in early June.
Not a key worker, and work from home, so just taking it easy with the car.
Just taking it out to the shops for click and collect each week. Keeps the battery topped up without putting silly miles on it.
