Just booked my car in for it's first service.........

Post by Griff74 »

"Is there anything you want us to look at sir?"
"Well seems as you asked, there is the shudder the car does when on the motorway when putting power back on after slowing down, esp between 60-70mph and most noticeable when using the ACC, the loud and unpleasant high pitched whining noise the engine makes when going over 3.5k revs and gets louder on the overrun, esp when in manual or sport mode, the drivers door mirror sounds like it's dying when folding and unfolding (where as the passenger one is practically silent), oh and the driver side seat belt height adjuster rattles in my ear when going over anything other than glass smooth roads plus it suffers from the mooing rear brakes when manoeuvring, esp when it is cold\damp"

Taking bets for how many of these they can't replicate\they all do that sir\make worse??

Edit - I didn't even mention the fact that they didn't reset the service indicator on the PDI so the car has been thinking it's service is due for the last 2 months, funnily enough from the date the VW app told me it was built and left the factory...............

I don't understand, I see this often. You guys from UK have problems with service indicator, but when you order a brand new car, and for example build date april, and delivery august. They should do whats called in Croatia "0 service". They take the car in the garage, clean it, check it and prepare for delivery, and that means when they "lock" the car in the factory mode, your vw service should reset everything. When I've got my Polo back in september 2019 it was all reseted, and my first service was showing in 30.000 km or 2 years. You should just go there and tell them to reset it which they should have done in the first place.

Also I can see the quality of services is poor, and dealers are what you call them stealers. I dont' know why? Shouldn't they care about customers?

No idea what's going on with the service indicator here in the UK, maybe it's configured differently for the UK for some reason?

All service indicators are set to long life from the factory.

Cro_vw's reference to the "0 service" is what we in the UK refer to as the Pre-delivery inspection (PDI). During PDI, as well as the dealer peeling off all the transit films and other protective coverings, checking spec is as ordered and looking for any transit damage, they should set the service indicator to time/distance if you buy a service pack or have indicated that you want to service annually.

The annual service interval is 15000km. For the UK, we start to get pestered for a service at the miles equivalent to 15000km - approximately 9400 miles, rather than 10000 miles, if you've exceeded that in less than a year and are on time/distance servicing.

My car has only done about 3k miles and I have the 12 month interval service package, same as I had on my previous Leon which was used in the exact same way and only indicated it wanted servicing at 12 month intervals. My Polo started the countdown to days until it wanted servicing pretty much 11 months to the day that I received the "car built and left the factory" alert on the VW app. I'm not surprised the dealer forgot to reset it tbh, they didn't even notice the rear wheel arch liners were very obviously rubbing against the wheels in the PDI and making a horrific noise!

@Griff74; The thoroughness of the dealer when doing the PDI can be a bit hit and miss, and may be an indication of the dealer’s quality of work when doing servicing and repairs. Same with VW dealerships in general - some are good and some not so good.

Quite a few instances reported on Golf forums of the shipping pucks on the mk7 Golf front suspension struts not being removed during PDI just after launch of the mk7, which used a different type of shipping puck to previous generation cars. However, there were members on some forums reporting these were still being missed by some dealers 2-3 years later, which IMO is unacceptable.

On all four of the VW’s I’ve owned, I’ve found various faults that should have been spotted during PDI but weren’t (misaligned body panels, paintwork scratches / imperfections). On my current car, the service regime should’ve been reset to time and distance servicing from the factory default flexible / long life service regime. I‘d specifically reminded the salesperson I was dealing with this needed to be done - both verbally and in writing shortly before taking delivery of the car, but it wasn’t done.

My experience of VW and their dealers has not been great so far tbh, I had much better service from the SEAT, Fiat, Mazda, Vauxhall (mostly....), Citroen, BMW and Toyota dealers I have dealt with previously.

Can't help but think that the UK's VW dealers being mostly swallowed up by the one large dealer group is not helping matters.

^ My 2013 MK7 Golf GTD was one of those shipping puck affected cars. The problem was not with different pucks, but with an extra puck VW started putting in. The technicians at PDI were feeling around under the rubber sleeve for 2 pucks in each of the 2 front shock struts and when they pulled 2 out they were satisfied that there were no more there. VW had started putting 3 in, so the 3rd was missed. My ride felt bone-crunchingly hard vs previous VWs so I had a feel around and found a pair of blue pucks. With them in place when they shouldn't have been, the top mount bearings had been crushed and were replaced under warranty. I got a huge VW Motorsport Golfing umbrella for my troubles!

Other things missed at PDI were:

1. Split stitching on a rear seat on a 1999 Polo
2. A neat crease in the front wing's wheel arch on a 2001 Polo - as if it had been pressed incorrectly and then painted up normally. The bodyshop repairing never got a perfect match on the repaired area.
3. A gouge in the steering wheel leather covering on a MK5 Golf.
4. My current Polo's tailgate required a bit of a slam to close because the striker plate setting was way off. I thought the slam was normal for a Polo until I saw paint chipping on the tailgate. PDI technician should've known it wasn't normal.

Maybe they're aware of some of the stuff but under time constraints just look to get it out of the door to fix under warranty later...if the customer notices.

Well I belive, even if they notice some defects on a car, they will rather hide it then fix it before delivery. My Polo had problem with carpet, and I didn't see that. After few months I've noticed, called them, and they fixed it under warranty. Also there is one small issue with light in area under AC, where is phone charger. Bulb is not in the place, and there is no light. But I will not fix that, because they have to remove many plastics, AC console, and it will probably rattle after that.
One more bigger problem is when I drive very slow and steer to the right there is some humming noise, not sure what that can be, a CV joint or wheel bearing, but I'll leave it for now and see what happends, maybe the noise go away after some time.

Soo not perfect, brad new car, many problems.. but small problems, everything else works, and I'm happy with my little Polo sel.

Mine's just had its first service at 1 year and only about 3300 miles also!

I've noticed since the service that the brakes have been super sensitive and the pedal is rock hard.. the first time I touched the brakes leaving their car park I almost shot through the windscreen  Not sure if it's just because they're pumped up from being brake tested?

Mines got the mooing when in reverse as well but I haven't bothered with it.

I’ve had the sensitive brakes experience many times before if I’ve had a garage courtesy car with less sensitive brakes than mine when my car’s in for servicing. Getting back in my car and I’ve nearly put myself through the windscreen when I first apply the brakes. The pedal sensitivity of my brakes hadn’t changed, but they just seemed very sensitive compared to the less sensitive brakes in the courtesy car.

The brakes on my wife's 2019 GTI+ are much more sensitive to my 2018 GTI+. Got in from work yesterday and shortly after, the wife arrived home and parked down the street because a van had left a smaller gap than she'd like for parking. So I jumped in hers and parallel parked into the gap. I was a little herky because her brakes feel much firmer and more sensitive than mine.

Well ... Iam not really sure if Iam gonna say it right since I might miss a few words in my english vocabulary ... :( But my GTI with GPF is almost fine except one situation. It happens only if I use ACC and my car is already breaking (even a little bit). Lets say while I approach intersection and car in front of me is already staying at lights. So my gti slowly starts to break. And at this point if I touch break pedal than car will just jump like ecu would panicked and tryed for a second to do emergency breaking and then continued with normal breaking. I hope it is understandable to you guys

I understand what you're saying. Doesn't happen with me because I hardly use ACC. I only put it on when travelling through an average speed camera monitored zone.

I am new to the Forum so don't know whether I am breaking any protocols by posting directly here if so apologies.
Bought a new Polo 1.0 Tsi Se last year on 29 June 2019 together with a service plan @£199 (2 Services). I was expecting to see the service reminders in the lead up to 29 June this year - mileage being currently 8K since new therefore based on 12 months criteria - but no warning lights have come on.
It would appear my car was set to "Flexible Service" schedule at the factory and wasn't changed to "Fixed" by the dealership at PDI.
Therefore technically service not required until 20K/24 months. Having spoken to the dealership they say it would be in line to follow the flexible service schedule and this would comply with 3 year warranty conditions. Although this is tempting I think it may be overidden by a clause in the service agreement which states
"All cars must be set to the fixed service regime by the Retailer". I would be grateful for your advice on when the service is due. Many thanks.
