Data Plug

Post by OomStu_ZA »

VW SA finally released the Data Plug for VW's dating back to 2008 this month so purchased one today to mess around with. Installation and account setup was a peice of cake. I know its a bit gimmicky but like that it displays actual fuel in the tank for example.

VW UK dealerships have been giving these away over the last few years. I'll try and get you one next time I'm in, if they're still free. RRP is £40 in the UK.

Not really useful for much apart from knowing the actual charge of your battery at any given time, and for VW to spy on how you drive your car!

VW SA released this service with the launch of the T-Cross then made it available to all vehicles post 2008 from June 2020.

I got a dataplug with the car at the end of last year. It's a good aplication to a lot of thing but with some bugs, at least mine doesn't mesuare correctely the quantity of fuel added at the gas station.

Mine neither, it requires data input.
Additionally, shouldn’t we be concerned about our privacy ?

Is always a trade-off... We "sell" our privacy daily to get "free" stuff. We all have shop cards to get discounts and lots of apps on our phones that use your data to create databases of users preferences and habits.

Data plug is great to see lots of stuff in the car but also creates a log of everything we do that vw could (but shouldn't) use to prove that we made bad stuff as redline the car with cold engine or drive to hard.

As I don't do a lot of wrong, I'm not that worried.
