My crunchy gear box

Post by M@Turner »

In the past few days i'v noticed that my gear change is becoming ever more increasingly difficult. When i am changing gear there is also quite a substantial amount of grinding i can feel through the gear stick.

I am becoming concerned that my gear box is buggered and i'm scared to think how much a new one is.

Could this be anything else which will be less costly.

Mat,

not to worry you mate but sounds the same as the way mine has just went, and i had to replace the clutch.

I hope it's not mate but that could be the reason.

Yeah I had my clutch cable replaced after things went all crunchy in the 'box. Started out with just reverse making a fuss of going in, the spread to the low gears a little (1, 2) before the clutch cable auto-adjust expired. Had it fixed with a new clutch cable under warranty so nothing as frustrating as CBurn's gearbox problems.

Doesn't sound very healthy though mate, sorry :(

I had a similar problem with mine last year but was resolved a lot less costly than the rest of the gang that have already posted...(well it was under warranty!)

They told me that simply some of the gear linkages had become misaligned and that all they do is lift the car on ramps, use this template thingy and then once it is in place they can see what has become misaligned and readjust it...it's been fine ever since...touch wood!

Not sure if this is the same as what you are experiencing...seriously these gearboxes are a bit pants...been thinking about getting a Lupo six-speed box put in next year...thinking that may be a bit more robust...

Yes had this too, its easy to fix, but you need a template to do it. But my concern is how it gets out of alignment. I had this and also tracking slightly out, so the cars obviously done something that I didn't know about. Could be something as trivial as a pot hole, in fact probably is.

clutch

Post by morrismen »

It is the clutch that causes the gear engagement problems. Either you clutch cable is sticking (renew it) or the clutch as worn out. When the clutch wears out, it's tempting to force it into gear. This causes the alignment problems. It would take a lot of external force to move the gears out of alignment if it were a pot hole etc as it's all recessed/concealed from road bumps - it would need a major slam in the gear linkages.

Start with these in order:
1. replace clutch cable and adjust up
2. replace clutch/bearing
3. check gear box linkages - probably okay anyway
