Fuse box (Replacing)

Post by Aybesea »

Pulled the fuse for the radio about 8 months ago as i suspected it to be draining the battery all has been good .However after nrrding to replace the fuse back in Tuesday two days later i got a complete flat battery and i mean no life even the instrument lights will not show.I am now going to replace the fuse box on the right hand dash panel .Is this going to be a easy job i can see there is two screws holding plus clips in which looks like it will have to come out from the rear. Are the wires plugged in at the back reason is i have seen a fusebox on Ebay but cannot see a connection for the wires to go in (not good photo) as the wires are cut off.

Just one thing, are you convinced, or what convinces you that the fuse box is faulty?
Are you sure that it is not the radio or one of its feed wires that is causing your problem with the battery draining?
The fuse box is only a few +12V bus bars direct and switched, and outgoing wires from connected fuses.

i am going to have the radio tested found some where local, when i put the fuse back in there were a few sparks like a short circit which should not have happened i don't think, had a look at the spare fuse blade connections in the box and they seem ok compared with the radio fuse connection i tried.I done a parasitic drainage test a quite while back and it looked like the radio or something connected to it is causing the problem so that is why i pulled the fuse .
It has gone flat before but never down to 3.6 v when i tested the battery after i took it out it is on charge at the mo.

So now you need to unplug that radio and fit the fuse back in and see what happens - or check the current drain after the controllers have been put to sleep maybe after 30 minutes, this is tricky to do as it needs you to have the bonnet open, connect a current meter between the car's local earth point and the battery -VE post, I use a long sharp probe lead for the battery end and a croc clip for the car local earth point, then with the long insulated sharp probe pressed firmly down into the top of the battery -VE post, loosen off the battery earth and lift the lead up off the post ie up the long insulated probe. You should only do that after 30 minutes has passed since the car has been "tampered" with, ie do not open any doors or some controller will be wakened back up giving you a false current drain measurement.

Thanks for the reply IIRC that is what i done last time, will check the battery tomorrow when it is fully charged,i took the radio out today to get that checked asap probably not for a few days though, at least being retired from work i do not need the car so will be able to see if the battery charge drops and how long it takes with the fuse just put in.Will update when i get a result
