Brake pad wear sensor wiring (vehicle harness)

Post by littlepolo »

Now that I have finally got around to fitting the correct front pads with wear sensor, I have discovered that the harness connector is damaged. I understand this wire is available as a part (but not sure of the run and how easy or not to replace). Would anyone have a part number? Alternatively, I could probably effect a repair (splice, solder, heatshrink, etc.) if I could get a new plug. I think the vehicle side plug/socket is classed as female (even though the pins stick out) and if I could get hold of one I can probably repair. I presume it's a generic product for automotive use.

There will be a VW Group P/N cast onto that connector, so maybe get a magnifying glass out, and any VW Group dealership can order a new one in.

Now, what is damaged in/with the connector, if it is only the retaining clip, then you could bodge it up using a few cable ties?

If all the wiring and pins are okay, and you still want/need to replace that connector, then once you have the new connector in your hands and it is the correct one but without any pins, what I did was to use a small and so portable vice - or similar, to crush the old connector back shell doing that lets you retrieve the pins with wiring intact and so you can insert them into the new connector.

Edit:- I think that what you have will be what might be called a female back shell with male terminals ie pins. If that makes any different.

I used to save my old pads from both cars as one had that (the 2002 Polo) and the other had the opposite (the 2000 Passat) so after needing to sort out one of them from new parts, I kept the pad side leads as each one could serve to repair the car side of the other!

I found the part no. 6Q0 927 903 S. Not inexpensive.

As for the old plug (vehicle side) it looks like the pins have come adrift. When the rain stops I'll see if I can (clean them up and) seat them into the brake pad wiring and locate the old plug over. I seem to recall I had disabled the sensor/warning in the ECU.

Something like this would be handy.

This looks even more promising (though makes for a fiddly repair).

I edited my last posting, if it makes any use/sense.

I'd think for most people that check their cars over, this function is not exactly important, my wife's current car, a 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI SEL does not have any brake wear warning function.

My old 2000 VW Passat went in for front bearings replacement late on in its life, a year later, I was servicing the brakes and thought "what the ###?" the brake wear cable was chopped and the cut ends hidden behind lots of tape! I did do an inline splice, but with the wires cut and the system active, I got no warnings.

My 2011 Audi S4, I was servicing the brakes and discovered that the wear sensor lead plug does not lock into its connecting socket - so I need to sort that out, I'll try gently heating both sides to see if I can force them to lock, overwise it will be a few cable ties until next Summer!

That first version would do, I'm guessing that the 2 numbers quoted are for a connector and a repair section of wire - that typically what VW Group sell as repair stuff, ie a wire with same connector at each end so that you don't need specialised tooling.

Your connector will have a part number on it though obviously the text will be extremely small hence the need for a mag glass, but it will give you the correct number. Repair wire - the smallest gauge offered by any VW group dealership will do as long as it comes with male terminals, ie pins. Cost will be minimal.
