Putting 225/40 R18 PS4s on mine and the wife's GTI+ to replace the Bridgestones improved pretty much every measurable tyre attribute except wear.
The tyres I got were a lot like the Bridgestone tyres I've suffered on 4 previous new Golfs. That's more to do with the tyre type than marginal size change, although having 5% more rubber on the road and the extra 2mm tyre wall will help.
I've never had decent Bridgestone tyre, finding it hard to believe Andy's are so good unless he's used to Ling-Long ditch finders, or the Scottish frugality won't let him bin tyres that aren't worn out.

No, they're just genuinely 'fine' - if they were anywhere near as bad as you describe, I'd bin them, but they're just not!monkeyhanger wrote: Wed Jan 27, 2021 2:58 pm I've never had decent Bridgestone tyre, finding it hard to believe Andy's are so good unless he's used to Ling-Long ditch finders, or the Scottish frugality won't let him bin tyres that aren't worn out.
There was an uneasy feeling in heavy rain when I first drove on them, but I got past that when i forced myself to push them in the wet.
No aquaplaning = no problem.
Apart from that, everything else is fine (can't comment on noise as I've never tried another tyre on my car to compare).
You'll have to believe me when I say I'm really hard on tyres, I bet there's not many on here get to do the speeds I do every day with hard braking and cornering to boot.
One of the perks of living where I do, 'private test tracks' all the way home.
I consider 15000 miles from front tyres decent.

Re: GTI ride firmness procrastination
I spend my life on country roads and struggle to get a tyre to last 10000miles on the abandoned Mexican highways between home and work. I've had my GTI since last March and i've changed the front 2 already (currently on 7800miles). I do understand though if I was to go easier I could see them through to 15000 possibly 20000 miles.Andy Beats wrote: Wed Jan 27, 2021 5:54 pmNo, they're just genuinely 'fine' - if they were anywhere near as bad as you describe, I'd bin them, but they're just not!monkeyhanger wrote: Wed Jan 27, 2021 2:58 pm I've never had decent Bridgestone tyre, finding it hard to believe Andy's are so good unless he's used to Ling-Long ditch finders, or the Scottish frugality won't let him bin tyres that aren't worn out.![]()

And in terms of ride firmness I was also worried when buying my car so I settled for 17" knowing I would swap the, imo, horrific Parkers for something more pleasing to the eye which also somehow decreased my premium which was odd.

Yup, that's the sort of mileage I was getting from fronts (and pads) when I had to commute 13 miles each way over Scottish hills every day.Stuart_Rendall wrote: Wed Jan 27, 2021 11:29 pm I spend my life on country roads and struggle to get a tyre to last 10000miles on the abandoned Mexican highways between home and work.
My current 3 mile commute is a lot easier on the tyres but, conversely, I reach a much higher top speed during it.
