What’s It Worth?

Post by Boxerboy »

It’s a rhetorical question.

Today we received a letter, yes a real paper one, from BCA who collect and dispose of VWFS cars at the end of the lease (PCH) period.

We have some great news: you don’t have to part with your vehicle.

A few online clicks later we see how much they’d like to sell us our mint, low mileage 2019 GTI+ in December.

Why am I not really surprised to see it at the top end of all 2019 GTI Polos listed on Autotrader.

So no chance I’m going to buy it to try and make a few bucks.

Roll on the replacement Polo R.

It's the way of the world at the moment still with decent low mileage cars. You're much better getting something new in my opinion (like you appear to be going to do).

It worked to my advantage this time round (for once). Got a ludicrously high trade in for my mint early 2020 Hyundai I30N. The garage then sold it within a couple of days off their Facebook page for only £1,600 less they I paid for it almost three years ago. Crazy times.

Got to be honest.. one of the first times that I've not felt screwed over trading in my old car for a new one.

Enjoy your new car when it comes :)

Agree it makes no sense to buy a car at end of lease if the asking price is unrealistically high.

However……………in certain circumstances, it might suit some people to buy their end of lease car if the wait for their new replacement car (lease or otherwise) is excessively long. Lead times on new Polos is pretty good compared to some other vehicles within VAG. However, the situation isn’t as good with some other models - there are discussions on some forums of people who’ve ordered a performance Golf and they still don’t have a confirmed build date after 18 months of waiting (I’ve read that VW have actually temporarily stopped taking new orders on performance Golf models). Some owners who have taken delivery have waited nearly two years. On the seatcupra.net forum, some forum members cars that did have a provisional build date have now disappeared off Seat’s / Cupra’s system entirely, so it’s unclear whether those cars will be built at all! 😮

In those circumstances, someone might decide to buy their end of lease car rather than buy a used car elsewhere at an inflated price to tide them over until their new car is built and delivered. Some people would prefer to buy the ex-lease car they’re familiar with, know it’s history and how it’s been treated rather than buy a temporary replacement that they know nothing about. The other option would be to cancel the new car they’re waiting for to be built and look elsewhere. However, everyone’s circumstances are different and it might suit some people to wait, especially if the deal they signed up to is unlikely to be found elsewhere in the current market.

IMHO there’s no right or wrong answer and each person needs to do what’s right for them. I personally wouldn’t pay over the odds to buy an end of lease car though.

I'm starting to consider my options. PCP will be up in May 2023 with a balloon payment to be made.

I know I can get a good price for the GTI (low mileage, 18k). Was initially thinking a loan to buy the car, but now I'm thinking would it make more financial sense to part ex for a new car.
