12v power socket

Hi,
I have a tyre pump which plugged into the cigarette lighter socket in my old car. I discovered this morning that it doesn't make a connection with the 12v socket in my polo.
Do I need some sort of adaptor and if so does it need to be vag specific?

Did you have the ignition turned on? - the 12v socket isn’t live until you switch the ignition on. I have 2020 GTI+ and my tyre compressor works fine in my car, but only with the ignition on.

Doh!
Never occured to me that it might not be live.
Hopefully that's the issue.
