I've been wondering for some years that since the standardization of LED modules for daytime running lights (DRL/TFL) and the use of LED tail lights, how is it possible that no one (referring to car manufacturers) has had the idea of eliminating the parking/side lights.

LED daytime running lights can perfectly fulfill the role of parking/side lights, without any need to vary the intensity in brightness.
Full brightness would be just right, the low brightness of the parking/side lights is absurd/has no sense in the traffic conditions where the use of parking lights is possible.

Some advantages:

- Less environmental pressure for the planet in materials.
- Production costs would be reduced (wires and elements for the operation of parking lights).
- Better identification of the vehicle in dark conditions and at any time.
- Simpler traffic regulations.

I would like to know your opinions, even if other possible circumstances are discussed.

I feel like they did that already on the T-Cross and Polo FL (both with the full LED headlights/IQ-lights)

Both our cars do not have additional side lights.

My thought was that before the DRL the side light were for the contours of the front of the car when one of the dipped beam lights failed.
So at nights not to be mistaken for a motorcycle.

But I can be in the wrong here :mrgreen:

i think there are regulations where the light has to be positioned.

I wish the all came with option when I start to automatically turn on the low beams. I know for 0 position on switch turns the drl on....

Even with LED modules Matrix/IQ lights, the parking/side lights function is still maintained by reducing the brightness of the module, this implies construction elements that in my humble opinion are unnecessary when having the DRL function.

I think the Golf8 with IQ lights doesn't do the brightness reduction for the parking/side lights, but I'm not sure. I mean the Golf8 that has that LED bar across the entire front grille.

I've been realizing for a long time now that most people care little or nothing or don't have the slightest knowledge about the difference between parking/side lights and daytime running lights. 😂
It was opaque even to make people understand the difference between parking lights and side lights when it is the same bulbs that do both.

On the polo AW FL the DRL dim when the dipped beam is on, the led bar on the frontgrill also lights up (dimmed)

So then your idea of the DRL doubling as side lights is correct.
On the Polo AW FL and the T-Cross, they also triple as turnsignal light. 😂

Driving since 2000 and always in older cars, before the DRL era.
Parking lights and side lights are basicly the same, US vehicles also had/have contourlights, so that they can be seen better from the side

Ow well, most people do not care If the lights are working and what they're for. Since clocklighting is always on on vehicles, whole heards of people forget to turn on the dipped beams. Driving with only DRL on.

Sigh....

Generally drl dim when dipped beam is on & turns off on relevant side if close to indicator. Most will also turn off if vehicle is in park. This is my findings on the whole rather than vag. I've activated the setting in VCDS so front & rear on with ignition on the ibiza so basically acting like an old volvo
