replacing 6c head unit

Post by jimmybond007 »

Hi - I know that replacing the 6r head unit is straightforward using the RCD330. However it seems the 6c is less straight forward due to the CD player in the glove box? So what's the best way to do this? Is it to find an MIB2 and swap or just get a cheaper car play after market unit (Pioneer etc). I'd prefer a factory look however.

Thanks.

Hello there,

The only downside with changing to the RCD330 compared to the standard MiB unit is that you will lose alot of functions that the standard unit has and maybe some steering wheel controls. Plus with the money and effort to convert your car to the RCD330, you are probably best on buying a carplay Glovebox unit (not just the screen) off eBay or sourcing it from your local U-Pull then having the Component Protection removed.

If you don't mind the above, feel free to read on. I could be wrong, but as far as I'm aware as I'm in the process of converting my 6R to official 6C MiB2 with carplay because... why not? The Quad lock connections and pinout to the Glovebox Unit are similar to what the RCD330 requires so should couple up with no issues. Quad lock here: https://imgur.com/a/V7gK46L

The only ball ache would be removing and disconnecting the glovebox unit and rerouting the quadlock cable to the centre head unit area as I'm not sure if it will reach.

Secondly, you WILL need to buy the Polo 6R trim piece that goes around the head unit and modify it slightly to fit your car, but there is pre-modified ones on the market like the ones here:

Once you've done all that and got the wiring to where you need it, you can just put the CD Unit back into its glovebox compartment and screen somewhere safe to revert back, or sell it.

I might be missing something important as I'm no expert like most people here, but I try
