Hi,
I have 69 plate GTI. A few weeks ago it started making a sound like you've got the blowers on speed 2-3 that sound like it comes from the centre of the dash below the windscreen. At first I thought it was just excessive wind noise but then realised it's mostly in 4 + 6 ,though I do sometimes here it in 5, but that sound is quieter and 'fluttery' rather than constant. The cabin noise also seems generally 'more' but I may be just hyper sensitice now. I have also noticed a few time when doing a long bend in 6th at about 45-50 which I do to join the motorway near where I live the sound becomes more metalic sounding but then settles back into 'blowing' one the car straightens up. It is having it's 40k gearbox service in a few weeks. Worse in specific gears does point to gearbox but I'm not sure why that would be affected on long bends? Gear changes seem normal. Any ideas what it may be?
Thanks

Re: Humming noise in certain gears and long corners
Could it be the soundaktor (fake engine sound)? Does the sound increase with the engine revs in the gears where the noise is most prominent? Have you changed the driver profile settings recently? - i .e. If you use individual mode, have you changed the engine sound to ‘Sport’ or have you selected sport mode?
Re: Humming noise in certain gears and long corners
Hi, thanks for the reply.
The humming/blower sound seems pretty consistent across speed and rev range, it probably gets a little louder as speed increases but not much really, and is less noticable at motorway speeds due to the engine and road noise but is always 'there' in 6th and 4th. I did wonder if it was an issue with the piped sound but is consistent and audible in all engine modes and is a background noise separate from the 'genuine' engine noise which does increase with revs. You would think the blowers were on if you'd never heard it before except on this long righthander I do in the morning where it sounds more metallic until straightening up, and I'm only doing 45-50 at that point in 6th, but in the same area as the humming/blower. I did get someone to record it on my phone in the car but it's not as obvious as it is in real life because of engine/road noise. I was hoping the gearbox sevice might fix it but the more I think about it the less convinced it will. I was 3rd owner (Fiesta ST got nicked;standard), it had a full gearbox selector unit changed at the gargages expense due to the 'only leave in postion P' warning.
Thanks

Re: Humming noise in certain gears and long corners
Hi, I fiddled with the engine sound settings in the customisation mode and whilst if affected the engine note as expected it didn’t affect the background hum, that remained constant regardless of engine mode and sound which is a shame, it definitely is coming from a central area though, but much more noticeably in 4&6 gears. It’s not a rattle like some have described. Thanks.

Re: Humming noise in certain gears and long corners
The DQ250 transmission is known for producing whining noises, typically starting in 4th gear, then occurring in 2nd and 5th gears.
Unless you’re prepared to find someone who can replace the bearings (which costs around €800), it’s best to just enjoy the car as it is.
The transmission is rated for 250,000 km, so the real question is whether you can live with the noise.
No amount of DSG servicing or resetting will fix this issue. I had the same problem with my old A3, and it reached 280,000 km, with the whining starting around 150,000 km.
My current AW GTI is making the exact noise already at 60k

Re: Humming noise in certain gears and long corners
Hi, thanks for the replies. I did wonder about wheel bearings I don’t think that would only happen in even gears. The 40k gearbox service didn’t fix it, disconnecting the Soundaktor didn’t help, so I’m going with the idea of a gearbox bearing being the culprit which I’m guessing would be difficult to 100% diagnose without going to the expense of taking to bits and changing it. There is a place 30 mins away that seem to do that sort of stuff, https://www.autogearbox.co.uk/. I only do about 7k per year. I guess either stump up some cash to replace possible culprits or turn the music up a bit!
Thanks.
Thanks.
