Extended warranty

Has anyone had any experience with the vw extended warranty that can be bought when the manufacturer one runs out at year 3. I’m tempted to buy it but if it’s not worth the paper it written on I won’t bother.

I purchased the extended motor plan at time of buying my car and since then renewed it every 2 years or at required service intervals, which ever came first. Touch wood there has been no need to call on VW to fix/replace/repair anything so cannot comment on that side of things. I use my vehicle daily so it needs to be reliable and am prepared to pay for the peace of mind.

I’ve read of forum members on the Golf forums successfully claiming under VW’s Extended Warranty product for items such as failed water pump / thermostat housing (a weak point on the mk7 / mk7.5 Golf that’s prone to fail) without any issue; I’m not aware of any who had their warranty claims declined by VW. However, as with the majority of (if not all) extended / aftermarket warranties, the scope of cover will be more limited than VW’s original three year factory warranty that comes with the car when new. The Extended Warranty will essentially cover sudden and unexpected failure of covered electrical and mechanical components, and there’ll be the usual range of insurance-based exclusions and restrictions commonly found in these warranty products. IMHO it’s always worth reading through the warranty booklet before you buy. The booklet should be accessible via a link on VW’s or VWFS’s website; that way you can check that it will meet your needs.

With VW’s Extended Warranty, you can select the level of cover (specific named components or all components), and the excess level (options of £0, £100 or £250 excess). Level of cover, excess, your annual mileage and (presumably) the model of VW you have are factors that are used to calculate the premium.

There’s also the option of VW’s All-In product instead of their Extended Warranty product. All-In provides 2 years warranty cover, 2 years servicing, 2 years roadside assistance and 2 MOT’s. Again, it’s worth having a read through the product documentation so you know what you would and wouldn’t be covered for before buying.

VW sometimes have special offers on the price of their warranty products - usually around the time of Black Friday but sometimes at other times of year too.

Overall very positive and well worth the money. Got a new gear selector out of my extended warranty and later a new water pump out my all-in package. That's almost £2000 worth of work through the dealer.

My 2 years extended warranty and then 2 years all in cost me about £1500 at around £30 per month. The major and minor service plus x2 MOT you get with the all-in is just the icing on the cake. Definitely had my moneys worth
