Track Rod ends

Post by Flashredpolo »

Hi,

I've got a 2018 GTI and just failed the MOT on track rod ends rubber being split. One of the ends completely split and the other wasn't far behind. Has anyone else experienced this failure yet?

I suppose this could be down to the awful roads in the UK. Could be something for you guys to watch out for

Anyone else had any strange MOT failures considering the age of our cars?

Also this costed me £388 at the dealer.

Thanks

Shocking price for small pieces of rubber.
What is the mileage roughly?

If that was the cost of just the parts then yes, it is a shocking price. I was assuming the £388 price quoted by @Flashredpolo also included the cost of labour for fitting.

Just about to hit 53,000 miles. That price was parts and labour

They also said its not covered by all in warranty

If challenged, VW would probably say it’s wear and perishable item (‘what is not covered’ section on 5th page) or normal deterioration (exclusion 3 on the 6th page) and there are exclusions of both in the All In warranty. VW conveniently don’t number the pages in the All In warranty! 🤣). Interestingly, track rod ends aren’t in list of wear and perishable items on the 5th page that are specifically not covered, which IMHO implies they’re covered 🤔. Maybe worth asking VW for clarification on where track rod ends are excluded?

I’d anticipate they are relying on the exclusion of ‘normal deterioration’.
