cleaner

Post by lord_sharpy »

hi guys, my gt used to cut out sometimes or look like it was gunna, u tried running some injector/card cleaner throgh the fuel, i used some stuff that treated 50-60 litres but put it all in on £20 worth! lol. definately made some difference, mite even be tempted to run some octane booster as the weather gets colder with optimax. used to run my bike on super and on a cold morning it ticked over so much better than with s**t standard unleaded.

think the ISV might need some attention too

ended up with it idling around 500 for a while after playing in the leaves - seemed either the ECU got confused, or the valve simply stuck and the engine found it's "set point" there instead of 850.. could actually rev it and it went back to 500. Seemed to have come unstuck after another quarter mile or so though... til at another point it had trouble keeping running after restarting past a stall.. just went slow, slower, stopped a couple times.

hmmm.

Well if your cars not running brilliantly the chip wont help matters. Best thing to do is get an air/fuel ratio meter or check the lambda probe at idle.

You can do this by conneting a voltmeter to the signal wire for the lamba probe (purple one). The voltage should fluctuate between 0 and 1 volt every second or so if all the sensors are working properly. When mine wasnt working properly it was stuck at 0.8-0.9V and I initially thought it was down to the lambda but it turned out to be the throttle position sensor.

You may also benefit from having the ignition timing reset. These things arent supposed to go out of allignment but its worth checking, especially if it pinks at idle occasionally.

yeah but i'm lazy :D

mind you i got arsed enough to do the chip, so when i get a moment...... ah that elusive moment ive been chasing for months where the motivation, opportunity, and above all memory come together at once.

;)

and for the love of pete, after 4 or 5 years of trying to find out, can someone offer a sound sample of what pinking sounds like?

ADDENDUM - odd last night, before going off to a house warming... started it, ran ok, but battery life stayed on, flickering at about half brightness. got a little brighter on gentle revving, but then slowly faded out.
hoping that's just water on the leads/other contacts and in the alternator, as i gave it a vigourous hose lashing earlier in the day, including blasting leaf-crap from underneath?

Either the belt is slipping, or your alternator brushes are bolloxed.

Pinking usually comes with alot of shaking of the engine.

This should be a link to a vid of my G40 on the rollers, pinking like a b***h. The pinking is the rattling a tin of marbles kinda sound...
