Condensation inside car
Condensation inside car
Since the weather has got colder the cabin of my Polo GTI gets very badly misted up with condensation. I figure it must be happening due to the aircon not working below a certain temp. (like my Audi) and therefore not drying out any moisture from the cabin. Im just wondering if anybody else has had the same problem since the weather has got colder. In my previous same shape Polo (but without aircon) it didn't do it, and neither did my 6N Polo (with aircon). If anybody can help out I would be very grateful because it means at the moment I am forced to use my Audi A4
, great car but not as much fun as the Polo!
i no this is the gti part, but thought i'd add a bit! my mk3 has a bit of a problem with leeking into the cabin! only in one foot wheel. n e way, we had a lot of rain yesturday so i sat in my car and eventually found where the water was coming from, at last!
n e way, today, my car was left in my works car park in the sun. when i left work to go to my car, i noticed all the windows had steam and there was a huge amount of water sitting on the inside of the rear window (so much that the rear window heater couldn't move it!) the rest of the windows were just a bt misty!
my point is, check for a build up of moisture in the car, i would look in the foot wells espeically! mine got a puddle in it!

Hi Sputnik - I have exactly the same issue with my GTI, and also never had such a problem with my previous Polo 6n 1.4.
For me, its not so much the cold weather....but a real problem on very wet days when I use the car on more than one occassion, i.e. where the car warms up, then cools down, then warms up again.
Glad someone else has the same problem - I thought it was just me not being able to use the Climatronic properly
(it may well be though!), so interested in any other replies.
Andy

Thanks for all the replies, it was even worse today when it was raining. It only happens in my car when its too cold for the compressor to work (I think below 5 degrees celcius). The fault is almost dangerous in my opinion. My possible theory is that the aircon flap motor for recirculation is faulty, and hence recirculating only the interior air (which would cause the condensation). Looks like Im going to have to book it in with VW
Condensation
I have had my Polo GTI since March 04. It comes with Climatronic instead of some old fashioned switches.
When I bought it I had big problems with misting up also and tried every combination (it was not very cold or wet at this point).
Went to dealers a few times and they checked it and said it was OK. The told me how to clear the windows best ( different answer each time I asked).
Afeter a summer of nice chilly aircon. The nightmare returned with vengance. Was in the car for 1.5 hours today and the best I could get was half the door windows clear and part of the windscrean clear with a big 'V' of condensation down the middle!!!!
I started off without it on. When the windows started to mist I switched it on and it got lots worse. Its almost like the air is not being dried.
It is very dangerous.
If anybody has answers I think we all want to know.
P.S> I am a brand new member came hunting the net because this is soooo bad.

Another thing to check for is if your car has nice carpet mats, when it gets to winter and its always wet your mats end up saturated and don't get a chance to dry out. The interior of the car ends up constantly damp and this can also cause condensation. I bought a set of cheap rubber car mats to throw over my nice carpet ones just now. Might help.
Also remember the best way to dry out the windows etc is 'Hot' air. And if it gets too warm in car, keep heater on and put window down a bit, as the air circualting round the car also helps to dry things out.
P.S remember air-con dries out the air so when you switch it off and it's cold/wet outside it's now damp/moist air thats been blown out the vents, and this is what tends to cause the misting up again.

I've got the A/C option on my GTi rather than Climatronic, and it works fine - just takes a few minutes to get going from cold - I usually get the aforementioned V shape down the centre of the screen for a few minutes! It often takes a good 6-8 minutes to near-fully clear the screen, which is fine with me!
As regards the mats, I've got a set of rubber mats for the front at this time of year - not for condensation reasons but because I don't want to get my carpets all mucky with the winter grime
Cheers

Had the same problem with my climatronic car would sometimes steam up while driving along. The car was back and forth to dealers who tried to make out it was operator error in the end it was a faulty flap for the inlet air not shutting properly. Also you are correct that the air con compressor does not work below 5.
A memo from VW to dealers was also that when restating in damp conditions when car was still warm was to point the air flow to the footwells to start with this way the air that had condensed would not be blown onto the windscreen.
I also agree that climatronic is pretty rubbish and I would have been very dissapointed if I had paid the £660 option price as on the Golf
