So
Folk coming over from australia for 6 weeks to 2 months
Buying and then selling a car on rather than spending 1000+ on renting
Thing is.............
can they actually get insurance on the bugger in this country?
Talked to endsleigh just now who no-noed the idea on the basis that they only do it for 12 month blocks (no mention of them being non-UK but maybe it was implied), put me through to some associated firm who supposedly do short term policies... who quickly turned me down for the same reason (they're brokers who have one firm on the books who sometimes do 6-month contracts)
arrgh. and this all the while i'm supposed to be finding, inspecting, test driving potential rides for them. seems somewhere down the line everyone else has just assumed that, you know, it's going to *snap* happen, just like that. granted, i'm going to get a (slightly) discounted and 6-week vetted car out of the other end of it, but wondering now if a couple hundred quid and a little extra peace of mind atop something that's already got 12 months parts & labour warranty is worth the hassle.
any clues?
tricky insurance problem (not the usual)

well i have no reason to suspect they're crap drivers, only two problems with those two suggestions:
1. cashing in - you have seen how much of a penalty you score for doing that, right? it's like cancelling a holiday.... suppose we could still do it (getting 1/2 to 2/3rds back instead of 10/12ths is still better than paying the full whack)
2. i'm not insured on the car that's going to be used yet, it certainly isnt going to be the polo, and it will spend most of it's time more than 20 miles away on the other side of birmingham. dont want to think how much it will cost me to have two policies/two cars covered at once......... though of course, i can still charge them the difference
hmmmmm having typed it all out neither of those sound too bad, would still like to see if anywhere just does a particular "thing" for short term foreign visitors however. i know british people have done it in italy before (long term business thing, buy a knackered old panda to beat around in).... just dunno how it could work for ozzies coming over here.
