right this is my first post here - so hello.
i've been driving around in an 97 mk4 1.4 that i totally un tastfully modified having no clue since april 02.
my peers now ride in 306 gti-6, 106 gti and an integra type-r and my polo cant keep up. even a sport ka is quicker.
so its time to get another, quicker polo. its time for a polo gti.
but reading these pedal box issue things i'm a bit aphrensive as you can imagine, dont want to be stumped by massive random bills - and i've heard the lupo gti with its 6 speed box hasnt had as many problems.
so how big an issue is the gear box thing on the polo gti?
what should i look out for?
when i find one (which aint easy, theres none around it seems) what can i do to make sure i dont get any surprise massive bills?
and anything else i should bear in mind?

Hi there, i wouldn't worry about the pedal box problem, every GTi was supposed to receive a recall to get it replaced, so should be ok there. If it's not been done you can arrange to get it sorted.
Other things to look out for are corrosion on the wheels, make sure all the electrics work and if you can, take a look at a few different GTi's. I'm sure plenty of people on here will tell you how much the trim levels differ. Ranging from seat, door and doorcard trim to xenons, air-con/climate, airbags stereo equipment.
I'm sure there are other faults, but so far(touch wood) that's all i know.

As mentioned pedal box should be covered but a test drive in one should very quickly let you know if there is still a problem.
The GTI alloys are a major problem, most have corrossion and its very expensive to replace the wheel plus £450 from a VW dealer. Repair per wheel is about £80 for a good job.
Good prices can be found on Ebay but obviously might not be local

actually finding a polo gti is prooving damn difficult
always the case when your looking for something, you cant find...
going to look at a lupo gti on friday - but i'd much rather have the cd multichanger/climate controlled luxury of the polo
(but the lupo seems to have suffered less problems and been a more nimble car)
mind you, whats a few quirks...

long term ish i really fancy a set of keskin kt5's
i've liked these wheels sufficiently long that i think i'm sure on the fact i like them
(i hate the masitaly vt5 or whatever they're called that are on my car now - why oh why did i choose them?)
i'd just mod my mk4 polo but the interior luxury and those blue lights of he mk5 gti and the 110,000 miles my mk4 has done make me think its time for another car (i do over 15k a year)
