Question: Your Parents car

Post by Loonball »

does what ever car your parents have when you were little or perhaps an uncle etc, mold your tastes in automobiles for later on in life?

My dad's first proper car was a mars red mk1 golf 1.8 driver reg A144 ABB
called gordon. He was lush.

My mothers first car was the same

My sisters first car was a Mk2 Golf GL

My brothers first car was a mk2 golf driver

and little me's first car is my Mars red Mk1 Gti 16v.

this is also the case throughout families of people i know.

Father - beetle, camper van, montego turbo, daimler, renault megane

mother - in the early days the same, but then all renaults

brother 1- beetles and camper vans also loves mk1's (who doesnt)

sister - always owned renaults

brother 2 - Maestro turbo, camper vans etc

I've often wondered where I got my love of dubs from as my dad has dabbled in Volvos, Saabs and Hondas over the past few years and then my sister finds some photos of when we were young and in them are two VW Passats from the 80's...

I've always been attracted to dubs since, hmmm about 11-12 years old, always fancied a GTI too but obviously too young to drive then. I can't think of a marque that has so much history, following and reputation for reliability.

I think I've influenced my mum's choice:

She now has the same car as me!!! Same colour and everything

Ha ha ha, that'll come in handy when you need spares!

Your mum's driving a vRS? How's cool's that? My mum doesn't even drive (although she has a licence!).

Well my mum cant drive and as far as I know no-one in my family has owned a dub. Hmm so maybe not then. But on the other hand, the cars my dad's had sice i was born

Citroen GSA which looked like this:

EDIT - oh well that link doesnt work but needless to say it was the estate version.

Then a nisssan bluebird estate

Followed by two sierras, a mk1 hatchback and a mk2 estate.

Then my dad moved over to volvos; a 240 Estate followed by an 850 Estate.

Well my Dad used to be a mechanic specialising in vw's so yes.

We always went to the shows when I was younger and have had a beetle and camper among others.

If there's anything I ever need doing my dad will do it for a few beers. He fitted a new clutch on my old golf which saved a packet!

My dad worked as a salesman for VAG until I was about 6, and the first car I remember my parents owning was a bright yellow mk1 polo :)
I'm not saying I wouldn't have bought another car if something else had come up that was in good nick, cheap and affordable to insure, but I have always had a leaning towards VWs and a polo was pretty much top on my list of first cars :)

My mum doesn't drive (thank god)

But my grandad used to own a mint mk2 derby in roundabout the same colour as my mk3 :-)

I wish he still had that car instead of the maestro..what a bag of filler that thing is.

I voted NO but on reflection it maybe should have been Yes.......

Reason for this change of mind is that on relection my parents choice of vehicle did influence my choice - on an inverse basis

I grew up being sick in the back of a huge number of F*rds and it convinced me that I would avoid them like the plague.....

My father did deviate from the steady diet of fords I think 4 times so it was kinda like

Loads of F*rds

Vauxhall Victor Estate  - in white with full length red stripe (well coooool and would swallow a lot of gear - but it rusted very quickly)

More F*rds

Rover P6 3500 manual  - boot was sooooo s**t we had to get a bracket to mount the spare wheel on it to be able to get anything in it and then you couldn't see jack s**t out of the rear window

More F*rds

Vauxhall Cavalier MKII Estate  - in red (not so cool but cavernous in terms of load space)

No Fords

Rover 216 Vanden Plas  - no comments on this other than it was truely truely S H 1 T E

Anyway looks like it generated a love of Vauxhalls - not really sure where the Vee Dub thang came from maybe summut along the lines off

Hate F*rds so thats a Fiesta out of the window (and Ka's sounds like croup)

Vauxhall don't make anything good with 4 cyl's so thats Corsa/nova etc off the list

AX, 106, 205, 206 & Saxo's too light and badly built

Rover - don't make me laugh

Anything Japanesse is a no no from the start - Hate Rice

What does that leave VW or Seat derivative - Cool that'll be a Polo

My mum drives a Celica GT, 2.0 16v 174bhp. Went from a 1.4 Renault 5 campus so good on her.

My dad drives a Xantia HDi, rediculously average and boring. Pretends he doesnt like cars but thats just because he feels that if he admitted to it he would be conforming to the norm and showing a weakness. Ejit.

Brother drives a Calibra Se5, horrible to drive and theres allways something wrong with it allthough never anything major. Would go back to VW if he had the money.

I chose a Polo to be different and doubt I will ever leave the VAG family now unless to buy an R34 GTR.

No, because my parents were into their Fords, Vauxhalls and MGs.
