Rear lights (again, I know!)

Post by Si_GTi »

As most of you are probably aware by now, I've been toying with the idea of replacing or modifying my rear light clusters for some time now, but have been put off by "lexus-style" crystal units and haven't found anything desirable as yet! The closest I came was when I saw the LED smoked black rears for the Golf 4 on FK Auto's site. I was hoping that the effort for the 6n2 would be something equally clean and simple but no.

Anyway so here's the plan: what about painted rear lights? I know it can be done, but obviously you have to be careful, using very thin paints of black paint to achieve the desired effect, and making sure that your bulbs are still strong enough to shine the right colours, and clearly. Anyone know of a how-to guide, or has anyone done it before?

If I went ahead the plan would be to source some rear lamps with no bulb holders and experiment on them, before swapping my all-red ones out for the painted jobbies.

Is it worth the hassle for a relatively unique look?

Cheers

Well I've had a look and quizzed VAGParts' Martyn about rears, but they don't really take my fancy. Here's the style I'm after:

The difference between these and the same item for the Polo is that the Polo one has a wierd silver bit in the middle of the cluster - I prefer the cleaner look of the Golf items. Wonder if Golf rear lights would fit on a Polo......

Just had a look on the FK Auto website. Now to be fair I've only ever seen the chrome-look and the red clusters - chrome ones are just too much like lexus for me, and the red ones, well they'll never work - I'm trying to replace the red ones I have atm!!

Anyway so the black/smoked clusters:

In all honesty they actually look pretty damn sweet   just I'd never seen them before so assumed that they'd look a bit garish heh heh.

Think I might give Gwent VW a call in the New Year!

FK Auto say 227 Euros I think - haven't got a converter to hand right now, but Saj should be able to get us a good deal at the aforementioned Gwent VW - maybe we should research a GB 8)
