I think it would be better to get heights from MKIV owners then rather than MKV GTi's

You say that, but my mate drives a mk3 golf, and 90mm springs dumped his down 110!

 Would I be right in saying that after you've put new lowering springs on , you should generally give it a couple of weeks to settle down to the new level?

the 40 mm springs on mine seem to have lowered mine to 58ish cm from ground at the back and 60 ish cm at the front

which is around 40mm at the back drop and 20mm at the front

hmm

Si, you are right, you need to allow for some time for the new prings to bed, usually a couple of weeks depending on the amount you drive...you could also help the bedding process by adding some ballast into the boot...like I did...a tonne of rubble from the yard! ha ha ha!

The way I was shown to measure the drop is to measure the centre of the wheel to the edge of the arch...but you will need to have the measurements for a none lowered GTI/MkV and remember GTI are already lowered by 10mm on standard springs.
