Do you have a self adjusting cable fitted?

The reason I ask is because these tend to stick and behave stupidly, causing the bite to change.

Try replacing the clutch cable for a manual adjusting one (self adjusting ones are no obsolete anyway.) It will cost you less than a tenner.

check cable, have a play around with the adjustment nuts if it's a manual... if it turns out to actually be the clutch, you can eke out a nearly-dead one a fair bit longer by playing with the nuts and doing a little double-declutching / holding in gear longer to ease around the worst of the grinds and slippage.

...whilst getting a date for a replacement /repair sorted of course.
