Advice needed on purchasing a GT/1.3...

Post by Nelson_Wilbury »

Well, I've found a 1991 black J plate GT Coupe with 90,000 miles. The owner is selling it next year and I'm first in the queue :P However, I haven't got an insurance quote yet so I'm also looking at a 1.3CL Hatchback

Couple of things I need to know for both models...

* What would insurance be like 3rd party for an 18 year old?
* Is there any noticable difference in power?
* Any other MK3 problems I need to look out for?
* Any other information you could help me out with?

Cheers

It all depends on insurance companies really, prices can change each year. The GT is group 8 and the 1.3 single point is group 6. Will you have any ncb next year ?

On the subject of power, yes there is a noticeable difference. The single point is 55 bhp and the GT is 75 bhp.

There is a few things to look out for on the Mk 3;

Check the fuel tank filler neck isnt badly rusted as they tend to.

Make sure there is no serious rust where the battery sits.

Check the service history for Cam belt changes (every 60k)

A couple of other things I cant think of right now.

Get the GT - you'll only want an engine transplant if you get the CL!

Insurance isn't that expensive, but it's not peanuts either. Worth it though IMHOHO. 8)

That was the cheapest quote!!!

the average was about £3000. The mods don't help much, could probably get it for about 1200 without the mods. A lot of insurers have told me its cause its a VW and if i have an accident then parts and labour are more expensive.
