Relplacing clutch cable.

Post by Petrified »

Not that I'm tempting fate or anything, I'm going on a relatively long journey tomorrow (4+ hours driving) in the G40, the first since I bought it.

The clutch cable feels a bit, well hard to say really, like it's grinding, only a bit maybe one or two of the strands have worn down??

Anyway I've got a cheap replacement one should anything go wrong from GSF.

How easy are they to replace, taking into account I'm crap with this sort of thing. ??

Or should I say how easy would it be to change at the side of the M1 in the dark?

I havn't got the haynes manual on me either
Thinking about it, I might stop by my parents place and pick it up in the morning.

Its fairly easy to change, the hardest bit is finding the hole in the bulkhead youre supposed to put the new cable through. Last time I changed one on one of my cars it took about 10mins.

Cool thanks, well I'll pick up the haynes manual anyway on the way through and take a tourch.

And for some reason now everytime I see the letters GSF I think Grove Street Families

So anyone seeing a red g40 on the hard sholder of the M1/M6/M42/M5/M4 it's probably me trying to change a clutch cable.

Easy peasy. As gareth said, the hardest bit is finding where to stick it through the bulkhead. The hole is built into the steering rack for some reason, on the underside of the rack just in front of the clutch pedal. Other than that it's a case of sticking one end through a bracket and over a hook, hooking the other end over the back of the clutch pedal and tightening the adjustment bolts until you get the right bite point. 15 minutes tops including adjustment :)

I went to change mine a while back but found that the cable I got from ECP was a few inches shorter than the one in the car... So I bought another form VW andit was the same length as the ECP one.. Still haven't actually got round to takign my original one out again though.

considering you're one of the rare few who have the opportunity to do it while the old one is still in place and intact I'd say do it, if you're unsure about the existing one. Tracing the current cable back from the gearbox to the bulkhead should be a piece of cake (luckily when mine broke, it was still attached that end so i could follow back the cable that was dragging on the road) and then you just have to remember where that is, unhook it from the gearbox (tough) and the pedal (fiddly), remove, thread the new one through (again a little tricky) and reattach both ends (same notes as before).

I think you should be able to twizzle the adjustment screws at the clutch end to get it off more easily there....

Oh, and it probably helps if you take the drivers seat out.

Well it lasted the 600+ mile round trip. And actually fools better now. It'll be a weekend job I guess, May give the car a clean as well. Got stopped by a copper saying the plates were too dirty.

We he didn't actually bother getting out of the car, just made pointy actions until I wound the windows down
