Help Fitting a PiperX Filter To a GT

Post by wul3er »

Hi Guys, i got my piperX air filter delivered today from Germany, and im already having trouble fitting it.
The problem is this, When i had a look at the old filter there seamed to be a lot more to it than what i have here. Maybee i need to buy more stuff im not sure, but i'd be glad if someone could point me in the right direction.
Thanks.
Ps i have posted pics but never got the time to take some pics of the engine bay and old standard filter.

Doesn't seem to be missing anything.

The metal bracket bolts onto the wing, the AFM bolts onto the bracket and the filter bolts onto the AFM. Connect up the wiring to the AFM and away you go.

Should look like this when it's done (mine had a PX once):

It's the standard hosing because the induction kit only bolts onto the standard AFM (air flow meter) - that's the thing with the black cap on it.

It should be as easy as unbolting the existing airbox (take the lid off and undo 4 bolts) and bolting the induction kit on.

I'm surprised there's a bracket at all - are they particularly heavy??

*Ah, just read krupa's post and the bracket is to hold up the AFM. Was forgetting the airbox usually does this job!!

Have you tried removing the warm air feed mixer thingy - basically everything in front of your airbox.

I did this on mine just over a week ago and it runs soo much better!! :D

*Sounds nicer too!! - and it's free!!

Whoever said induction kits make GT's run bad on cold days is talking nonsense. Maybe on other cars but not these. I had a p/x induction kit on my blue GT for a couple of years and it never missed a beat. That included driving in freezing winter conditions.

they're probably thinking of bolt-on filters on mk2s, or any carbed engine for that matter.

yeah gotta agree you dont neeed a warm air intake for a GT, but on a carbed car (mk2) its a necessity I think.

also even when you remove the hot air intake thingy from the GT airbox, the holes in the front of the airbox can do with enlarging as they do restrict airflow.

just taken all the warm air feed stuff off, while i was at it i cleaned all the leaves and crap out of the air box. I decided to hear it without the airbox on, so i proped up the air box with a screw driver (with no bottom on the air box) and started the car, the noise it made was lovely! big deep roar when i was revving it. I think it has made a sligh difference with the warm air feed off tho, ive made a sort of ram air in take thing with the old pipeing, looks pretty good! I may get a piper x induction kit for it now tho after hearing the noise!

Did you remove the vacuum switch from the TB elbow too nick??

That itself is quite a big restriction, and is only there to control the warm air feed, so can now be removed!!

I also removed the exhaust manifold shroud as that's no longer needed - saves a good 100g in weight I would imagine!!

Note the lack of vacuum pipes coming out from the TB elbow - that's where the vacuum switch lived!!

The car definitely runs smoother now!! :D

Dom, what AFM are you running at the moment??

I'm considering an upgrade at the moment, but i'm a bit worried about reports of bad running with a golf one on. Would a golf/gt hybrid work better in this case??

That way I could pick from an exciting range of Golf induction kits rather than having to pick the old Piper X. :D

you just need to adjust the golf one but its guesswork without the right equipment. I still need to fiddle about with my golf one and see if I can get it to work. I might do that tomorrow actually weather permitting. Looking at getting the bugger ready for the rolling road day! :D
