Gasoline & 1.2 12v 65bhp

Hey guys. I think my car is spending to much gasoline. I managed for two times to do 500/520km with a tank (when the reserve light lit up) but now I can only manage to do 400km or so. Since that time the car is probably 10kg more heavy but I don't think 10/15kg make that much difference.

Could be something wrong with the car, some part malfunction? My drive speed & style is the same.

What did you do to the car to add 10/15kg?

Anything else like induction kit/ filters? exhaust? chip?
Check Tyre pressure/grip, tracking.
Do you buy from the same pump? If so try another.

Cant think of much else right now!

10/15kg are from new speakers in front, amp in the back+amp box. No chips, no induction kits, no exausts. I put my gasoline always in the same pump. Could it be the air filter or something that is dirty?

Could be air filter, not sure how old they are before they need to be replaced. And I wouldn't have thought it would make that much difference.

A large drain on the electrics can also cause worse mpg but again I doubt it would be that noticable.

The reason I asked about the pump. I was getting very poor fuel consumption when I had my 2000 Polo, I got my fuel at another garage and it came back up. Maybe a bad supply?? Not sure. Anyone else??

these engines are weird

i drove like a granny to see how much milegae i can get out of it
i got 290miles

i thrashed the thing and i got 350miles

and i only drive into and out of town

tyre pressure is one of the most important factors in fuel economy. Setting it at a couple psi above the recommended values would be fine. also, weather conditions also affect fuel consumption. i'd say check your tyre pressure and if that doesn't help then wait until spring

i have the same engine and have the same problem.

used to get close to 300miles round the town etc and once got 325mile on the motorway sitting at 5k revs.

now i get 230 miles to a tank round town etc, and i drive 70% of the time like a granny, when i never used to.

surely tyre pressue wont knock 70miles off how much you get from a tank??

would shell optimax give you better consumption?

or would a performance air filter be a good idea?

also just thought would larger wheels adjust the trip counter? as i now have 17" alloys on now, where as i used to have the standard 14's on.

anyone know much about this area?

i got 32MPG with 14s (average)
and only managed 29MPG with 18s

but now, it has gone up to 35MPG on the previous tank ... still with 18s on btw

maybe its run in?

is the tank around 10 gallon then?

320 mile on 14, 290 on 18's but then up to 350?

confusing stuff!

personally i think there is somethin up with the engines as they age.

I have to check the tyre pressure. I haven't change the wheels, still on 195/50 R15. The strange thing is that with the same setup and drive style i used to do 500km and now I dow 400km+-.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the engines personally (fine one to talk as i've just had all my coil packs changed) but driving style. On average i get 300 miles approx as the fuel light comes on. I was getting this with a standard air filter doing 40 miles a day motorway driving, however somethimes i got more some times i got less. I think it also depends on the fuel. I've only ever used "normal" fuel and it's usually from the local sainsbury's and my mileage can vary hugely from doing the same driving. Worst comparison is doing my usual 40 miles a day, one week i got 290 almost out of fuel next week i got 370 almost out of fuel again. I'd done exactly the same distance, same kind of driving and no traffic problems at all.

I haven't had my K&N pannel filter in long, i've only filled the car up 2/3 times and done completely different driving a lot of short journeys as well as long, some very different driving styles and each time as it gets towards th4e red it hits 300 miles.

I have to say when i was going to college which is 6 mile round trips on a daily basis i was only getting 250 - 290 to a tank.

Logistix what tyre pressure (psi) are your tyres inflated to?

vw recommends 34psi front 30psi rear tyre pressure for 16" 205/45 tyres, i try to maintain 36psi all around when i am on a mpg test. if those of you who are having mileage problems did not change your tyre pressure checking habits, then i'd guess it's something to do with the engines... but shouldn't the engines get more efficient as they break in more? or is that just diesels?

Mine was a week ago. :S I really have to increase the tyre pressure. I think it's somewhat low.
