Its a mk4, the box will blow up soon enough, then you can drop a nice 8p in there out of a mk3.nuttinnew wrote:My graph has that dip in it also.
For comparison;
1.3 spi mk4
65 (45) bhp @ 4611rpm
approx 94lb ft at about 2800rpm
The biggest pain in the ass with this car is the gearing; GT gearing with very much non-gt power delivery. A total load of annoying toss, I hate it. I was expecting it to be more like a mk3 CL tbh which I could live with as I only want to plod along and keep the revs down on the motorway but what happens? At any reasonable speed on the m-way it revs too high for the delivery characteristics which really psses me off. I will get round to trying a GT cam to see if it makes it more sensible but tbh I think it really needs a more suitable box and that really fcks me off![]()
(and breathe....)
Krupa, I think the screaming was down to dodgy tracking/camber after a pothole-laden trip across sunny London to get there
Gareth, box seems fine atm but I do have a 53k 8p knocking about for my G that may have to find it's way in
I don't suppose anyone knows if a 1.6 spi injector unit has a larger butterfly than the 1.3? Come to think of it I wonder if summat off of a Golf3 1.8 would fit
I'm sure I read somewhere of BRM putting a 268 into a 1.6 spi so I might have to give it a try as well. Oh feck, I'll need a vernier. I give up!

I dunno if anyones tried an nz throttlebody yet but dom had on in his collection so he may have tried something with it, i dunno
Yep, ditch the oil breather, get a catch tank. (Im half way there, oil breather is vented to air but no catch tank yet)
Ive never removed a charcoal cannister before, I cant see it making much difference either way but if you dont need it i say ditch it.

this almost counts as archive-digging, but....
mr strange -- thats about what i said wasnt it?
heh.. in any case i had a think, had another look over karl's graph, it still looks funky but not so bad as before. for some reason my memory was serving up a picture of an even steeper peak than is actually there. plus he's not the only one posting similar 1.3CL figures...
again without the benefit of experience, but i can't think that the 1.3s would be so greatly more reticent to rev than the 1.0, which was zingy enough (until you were into 2nd gear anyway
... had a G owner looking at a dash vid and asking when i was going to dewedge it
) ...
certainly cant be any worse than the new motor.. its got enough power but even in neutral that needle seems to take its sweet time, and revving past 5.5k is a complete waste of everyone's time once you're in 2nd
nice curves there krupa
didn't the mk4 use the same boxes as the mk3? using up whatever was left - 60/75hp 1.4 (8v) getting some strange mongrel box that's half AHV (the internal ratios, with 5th=0.891), half small diesel / 1.6 / formule-E (the diff, about 3.8-3.9) is one that i've seen before. Giving the benefits of an excessively tall 1st gear and a silly short 5th! (like your max power being at about 85mph)
get an 8p in there, or a moddied gt / golf box!

I've got some plastic caps. I can paint some black to match if needed with some plastic dye paint.
Removing the charcoal canister means blocking the vacuum pipes and the where it goes into the small rubber pope between the isv and inlet manifold. You can buy the plug for that from vag. Don't block the clear tubing that comes the tank as it's a breather, let it vent to air.
