URGENT HELP NEEDED PLS

I have a powerbook g4 and bt broadband...

...it comes with firewall stuff but i'm not sure how good it is, i think i might have a virus but i couldnt be sure. What anti virus stuff should i get and what should i really be prepared to pay for it?

I have osX and OS 9

There's norton anti virus software on ebay for £14.98 but i'm not sure it's any good for me

someone has told me to get firefox, any ideas what thats like?

Firefox is excellent, but you may still need IE in reserve for those websites that don't support it, such as MSN Hotmail



Go to www.getfirefox.com and download it - then trial it and see what you make of it

yeah i've got firefox - very good, and no activeX crappy spyware and so on!

does zonealarm work on the mac? that's pretty darn good!

Don't know about the os9 stuff, but in os x, you've got a (good) firewall built in - look under System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall to see if you've got it turned on. I don't because there's nothing in particular to worry about the OS X and I've got a hardware router that only forwards a few ports anyway.

As for the virus thing. afaik, there are no meaningful virus products for os x as there are *no* viruses (viri?)! (yet). you're safe for any vbscripts or activex components sent as email attachments as you don't have those technologies!

I'm assuming that you're using safari as your browser - it's built off the same code base as firefox. although the implementation's a bit different some of the concepts are the same (e.g. tabbed browsing) and much of the code is (i.e. the rendering engine). If you do choose to install firefox on os x, it would be worth your while getting hold of the re-compiled versions specific for your cpu. There are G4 and G5 versions out there which are supposed to be *blindling* fast because of their native code, but I haven't had a look yet. Google will point you in the right direction, but as you mention that you have os9 as well are you on a G3? If so, these won't apply.

What is it that makes you think "you've got a virus"?

also - just a quick thought would be to check that you os install is up to date as apple do release quite a few security updates (i never realised this before i got this machine...)

Check under the Apple Menu > Software Update but be aware that this is a bit more risky than just installing software

When you downloaded something, was it a dmg image? Is there now an image of a disk on your desktop / appearing in the drives section of finder?
