Hi all,
I just want to make sure i ain't goin' mad......... At the moment whenever i brake i get a slight noise coming from the rear brakes..... It's only noticable if the radio isn't on too loud and especially at low speed when there is no road noise.
The best way to describe the noise is a kind of grinding noise.....Very much like when you first use your brakes when the car has been stood a while and there's a little rust on the disks....That noise they make as the rust gets worn off....But this happens all the time and i can only hear it from the rear Brakes.
The dealer looked at them on Monday when the car was serviced and cleaned the brakes and said all was ok but i still get the noise.
I'm sue i've never heard it other than this last couple of months but does anyone else have this noise from the brakes??? Or is it me that's goin' mad and noticing noises that have always been there!!!
As i said it's not a loud noise and is only noticable if the radio is off or quiet and usually just as i'm coming to a stop when the road noise disappears.
I reckon i'm gonna have to go back to the dealers and ask someone to come in the car with me so i can actually get them to hear the noise if need be.
Cheers
Dave.

I always get that noise, like a slight grinding from the back, it's a little hard to explain. However its perfectly normal, I believe its a VW trait - in fact my boss, who bought a Seat Ibiza recently, asked me about it as his Ibiza does the same thing. Both Boras my parents have owned do it too.
I think I read somewhere it was down to over-servoed (sp?) brakes...?

Cheers for that Si........ I must be going mad cos i never noticed it till just before xmas and i've had the car 2 years
I'll sleep better now knowing it's a common problem that doesn't need sorting....... Now i've just got to try and find where the leak on my washer system is........................... They said they couldn't find any leaks on the system but the washer system is emptying in less that a week.... I can't decide where the leak is i thought it was the hose to the rear washer as it takes around 1-2 seconds before any water comes out of the jet..... But then last night and this morning there was a stream of water from my front bumper just under the driver side headlight washer jet.......
I think this bloody car is jinxed
Cheers

Dave,
I don't think it's just your car that is jinxed! We've all had to take our GTI back for one thing or another! Hope it all gets sorted.
Talking brakes, does anyone experience juddering when braking hard? I know that the ABS kicks in and that juddering is normal through the brake pedal but what about the steering wheel? My friend thought it could be that I've not disengaged the clutch before braking hard, could that be it?

Si, I had a similar problem on my last car (Rover 618iS Sport) when i took it to the dealers under warrenty they found that one, or both not sure, of the front discs were warped hence the vibration up through the steering wheel..... A new set of front discs cured it.Talking brakes, does anyone experience juddering when braking hard? Del, I have just had new pads all round and new discs on the front.... well last february, but the car has been off the roads for 6 weeks this last 12 months due to pedal box and a water leak. But it would be interesting to know when you have the rear discs changed if the noise changes in any way.Mine makes that grinding noise aswell.
I'm gonna be changing my discs and pads soon front and rear so i'll let you know if it goes away.
Cheers
Dave.
