The amount of people who would end up unemployed, and the amount of debt it would bring to the country would mean it's not worth his while.

How would it bring debt we'll have to buy a replacement car (if your current one's over the age limit),get parts from dealers and get approved garages to do repairs, surely that means more revenue for the goverment in taxe's witch is all they seem to be bothered with anyway

is there any good god damn REASON given as to why this legistlation would be brought in?

if it's on environmental grounds then i would cry horse puckey - we were'nt exactly dead 15 years ago (1990, folks) when every last vehicle on the road was of that design or older, and probably most of them weren't looked after anywhere near as well as most old cars now being driven by enthusiasts. The number that still survive probably pose about as much enivronmental threat as all the Hummer H1s currently sold in the UK
(besides, what's the most popular platform for an electric car conversion? surprisingly, it's the mk1 golf - lightweight, basic, etc..)

sounds like a new round of not-that-stealthy stealth taxes to me (how much do you think they'll charge for you to scrap your car once it hits 15 years?) to fund military failures and expensive party parties... obviously the camera's aren't raking enough revenue in!

or perhaps that also means that all vehicles without some kind of electronic ignition - and therefore easily speed-limitable or killable by remote means (for whatever reason - traffic offenses, being a known criminal, or just on tony's "i dont like this person, they dont agree with me" list) - would become illegal. Also the sale of such parts to convert more modern cars to be invulnerable to these measures becomes illegal.

what a crock. i'm still in doubt we will have the opportunity to vote these twunts out, by the way... physical action may become the neccessary way out if so

PPS Groovy, you'd be shocked, don't discount the ability of the greater proportion (64%, in a study done to measure people's reactions to unreasonable requests by authority) to be complete mindless sheep even when asked to do something so totally bizarre it makes the mind boggle. The sight of several labour ministers commemorating auschwitz a couple weeks back really was the most darkly ironic thing......

PPPS I'm already considering removing the plates and VIN numbers off my car, and electrifying the frame every time i park it.... this makes me wanna do it more so.

And if i remember from my premonitions, this is where the power cuts. I hope that bit of deja vu DOESNT come out.

I, for one, would act against this. My argument would be structured around the heritage aspect. Why are our historical buildings to be treasured, yet our motoring history is to be actively destroyed?! This is one of the few things the UK is still recognised for on an international scale and we must protect it.

BC - it's hugely interesting that you posted that scan, as I've been discussing it completely independently with a couple of people earlier today. It's amazing how quickly it's spread through the communities this afternoon. I guess that gives you a feel for the dissent it's causing.

I could raise the bar further and introduce the *mandatory* road tolling that's coming in the next five years. The infrastructure's been bought (the analogue TV masts, plus access to streetlights sold through the Highways Agency) and the technologies have arrived (GPS plus UWB). Germany is set to do this (motorways only) in the next couple of years. As sure as GPS monitoring of miles and places travelled is arriving, insurance and speeding fines based on the same technology will follow. The FUD for the masses has already started (did you see Trevor MacDonald on Friday night?). The decision has been made. From this point on it's just semantics.

I'm sure I've posted on this before on here -- the issue is not going away and it will happen. Bear in mind that our right of public demonstration was taken away about three years ago (was it the Police Powers Bill?? I can't remember its name).

To give you a feel of what calculating people we're up against -- how many people noticed when the ID Card Bill passed its third reading? What? You didn't notice? That's because it was quickly pushed through on the same day that the press was occupied with Prince Charles' big announcement. Now call me a cynic, but that was just *too* convienent.

i wonder if theres any significance in my heart doing about 100 bpm right now? sense of hopelessness. who ARE these c**ts who want to number and limit us?

one of my friends has already f***ed off to america (plenty of hills to take to, for one thing) and another seems to be going to oz. i've half a mind to join em. not like i've got too much here really other than family/friends, all of whom i only get a little contact with anyway, and a traineeship into a not-particularly-lucrative career.

its been a long time since ive felt any kind of true anger or killer instinct, and i really dont want to either - this is a very uncomfortable emotion.

the everyday sheeple who would be ok to zone out and travel everywhere at 29mph, never question any government policy or action, always pay their taxes even if they're barely left with money for food and heating, and even follow on into a soldier's uniform if so required, won't really find any harm in these actions. those of us who like to live a little more or a little different will attempt a revolt, but i suspect we wont last long - branded as criminals, terrorists, dangerous psychotics, the ordinary man in the street wouldn't think twice about taking a proffered gun and shooting you down if he were given the order, and told that you were so dangerous that you shouldn't be allowed five seconds longer - or picking up an iron bar or brick. You see the rough ride that suspected paedophiles have had? Their windows caved in, houses spraypainted, goods destroyed and even attacked, all because a few people too stupid to think for themselves got a (false!) wind that they might be child molesters?

Well I can say for certain that the moment I can afford to do so I'm leaving the UK.. Germany or the US both seem reasonably attractive propositions, if I can force myself to ignore US politics / my German holds up well enough to actually live there..

funny that germany could be considered the antithesis to this now - but how long for?

the himalayan villages seen on the telly recently could be a cool place to go. who cares about student debt or any of the other silly modern trappings when you're up in a mountain with some cows? mind you --- those bringing the id cards etc in might welcome that prospect. you may as well be dead or in prison if you do that.

EDIT --- apparently Canada, Australia and New Zealand all rejected identity cards outright (oddly enough, at least one of them being founded on the basis of all immigrants being criminals

) ... perhaps the rest of their civil liberties might also be quite safe?

PS destruction of history thing - 1984 / 451'F do come to mind here, and no doubt all copies of those would be the first to go... not so dramatically though.... oh, we dont need libraries any more, we have the internet *all public libraries closed* *all stock "liquidated"* .... few months later .... *all internet sites around the same subject mysteriously vanish*

The idea that the Government would pass an act that is going to force all people with 15+ y/o cars to buy new ones is ridiculous, and I'd imagine impossible to enforce.

You can't make people buy new cars, and I'd imagine it's an infringement of civil liberties making people with old cars pay to tell someone where they're going each time they're making a long trip somewhere. Imagine the costs and the paperwork behind setting that up, come on that's b*******s.

That said there must be a thousand or so Fox Hunting forums who would never have believed that the day would come where their hobby would be outlawed. Scary thought.

PS - I know that there are plenty of people who think killing cute fluffy foxes with a pack of hounds is cruel, but there is also a considerable lobby of tree huggers who'd be just as glad to see cars disappear.
