Refurbished my driver's seat today! With Pics!

Post by Krupa »

I'm exhausted!

Had been planning on getting it finished last night, but it's a time consuming job to do properly.

Basically, the bolsters on the door side of my driver's seat had begun to collapse. Not seriously, but I could feel less support on my right hand side and my passenger seat (which is mint) felt quite different to sit in. Bought a passenger seat of nicksiggy last weekend (thanks again Nick!) and decided to start yesterday.

Basically, replacing the seat base bolsters is easy. I reckon doing that is an hour's work to do first time, maybe half an hour if you've done it before.

Replacing the side bolsters involves a lot of work, and is only for brave people and nutcases like me! It involves stripping the whole back and cutting the bolster off. I tried getting the plastic rings which keep the headrest in place to come off the donor seat so I could transplant the whole foam piece, but they won't come off without breaking them and I didn't want to damage my driver's seat.

It's all doable in a DIY stylee though, and comes highly recommended if you're brave enough to cut your seat foam. My driver's seat is as new!

This is hardly an FAQ, but here are the key pics:

Before any work - note that the side bolsters are different shapes and the base bolster is flatter on the outer edge.

Having taken out the base bolster, I was able to compare the old one (left) with the new one (right)

Same deal here, this is the chopped off new side bolster (right) placed next to the original bolster (left). I nearly left the side one alone, thinking it wasn't too bad but I'm glad I did, the old one was f****d!

The finished article, before I'd cleaned it up. MUCH more supportive! Look at all the knackered foam which fell out while I was dismantling the chair!

I'll do a full FAQ soon.

this is the job that I am facing for my seats. You say the sottom of the seat is easy? how easy is it and how do you about it. Your advice would really be appreciated as mine you can feel the metal shaping bar in your A$$
