I'm close(ish) to having the silver CL ready for its MOT very soon!

Job's i have to do still are as follows...

renew passenger side strut top bearing...

change driverside rear shock assembly inclusive of lowering spring...

change fuel tank (this is the one im not really looking forward to on my own )...

change center section of exhaust for the old one from the blue CL...

change the passenger side headlight assmebly as the adjusment is broken...

Oh... and put all the seats back in aswell, lol.


Some optional things that i might occupy some of my time with are ...

change the steering wheel to that from a GT...

and also change the clocks to some GT ones aswell.


That's about it for now (just cold, and now back at work tonight... so limited daylight hours ahead of me untill the comming weekend)

don't worry about the fuel tank, they aren't hard to do. just make sure it's as empty as you can get it so it's lighter as you'll need to get under the car & manouver it around to get it out.

Today is fuel tank removal / refitting day! DUN DUN DUR!

Yesterday, already loosened everything off already, its now just a matter of the filler neck assembly

The tank on the silver CL seems to have a little extra holding it on (compared to the blue CL, hmm).

I will figure it out im sure, as today here in the north east, its actualy quite sunny / good weather (hope i dont curse myself with this jusy yet)

Anyways... off outside i shall go!

heh apart from the clocks, the tank is about the only thing i'd want to attempt out of that lot!

depressurise the system (unplug the pump power supply and run the engine til it conks, then crank a bit longer), pop the rear bench up, open the access hatch, remove the pump/return line and level sender, make sure it's all wiped off.... undo the straps etc and lower off... put new one in place and strap in firmly... replace the pumps etc and make sure everything's bolted back together... syphon & filter the fuel from the old tank into a jug (or five) and put a starter amount in the new one... reconnect pump power... crank it til it runs smooth... go fill up.

If only it had been that easy! LOL

I needed a m8 to assit me in full removal (however... i did get very far on my own, considering the car was @ limited height on axle stands )

The problem is the angle of the fuel filler neck... the tank has to be situated @ a certain angle / position to allow clearance of the back part of the drivers side sill. Not so bad when working with the car considerably high in the air (but not as high as i managed on a few axle stands & a trolley jack with limited adjustment)

Anyways... the new tank is all on & i also took the liberty of spraying it all with 'Tetroseal' (amazing stuff that is, hehe). The tank comes with a 2 year guarantee from VW, but that wasnt good enough for me, i want the tank to last longer than that for sure, so thats where the 'Tetroseal' came into action (& for around 3 quid a can, well worth it IMHO!)

Got some pix that i will post in another thread soon (just need a little time to get something to eat first)

The tank didn't all go according to plan, as my m8 was in a bit of a hurry... i had neglected the position of the vent pipe (guessing this is what it could be know as), & instead of being re3ady to fit clo0se to the internal fuel pump... it got squashed againt the underbody of the car.... so basically the tank needs to be semi-removed to allow acess to it... B0LL0X!

Anyways... it was what i considered the only 2 man job that needs doing for the MOT on the car.

It's similar to Waxoil m8. I got some in my local motor factors (500ml spray can) for about 3 quid.

You can also opt for the stuff in a tub instead, about 3 quid for 1 litre

Today... i managed to gain access to the top of the fuel tank where the pipes for the pump & possible return pipe(?) are located... fixed those with minimal fuss

Also managed to replace the entire passenger side headlight assembly (as the adjuster had snapped on the bottom of the plastic securing plate).

Then decied to try & adjust the fitment of the front bumper / carrier on the drivers side. Whilst doing this i decided it was worth removing the entire front bumper. As i did, all went smoothly, but... the passenger side bolt that secures the bumper (underneath the number plate) was just spinning with a crunching sound from behind
So i eventually manged to remove the bumper fully & found that the main bumper carrier (huge metal panel) had corroded quite badly & the crunching sound i had heard was infact one of the welds had snapped (where the bumper bolts upto the carrier).
So... tomorrow im off to order a new one from a panel specialists
Been quoted just over 26 quid all in (quite impressed, as the last panel i got from them was around 32 quid all in, & that was for a BMW e30)

Once again.. im gonna cover it in 'Tetroseal', to try & gain a little more longevity from it

Damn... @ this rate, im slowly rebuilding the whole bl00dy car

Also gonna stop off @ the local VW $tealership & get all the associated nuts, bolts & washers to renew them all (as they are all quite heavily coroded aswell)

I wonder if it is possiable to put the plastic inner arch bits that the front have on the back arches? Or are they completly differnt shapes?

Could help prevent more rustage?

Good idea Dan, but space in the rear arches compared to the front is very limited. And yeah, i think the front plaggy arches are much larger too.

Just shy of 200 quid m8

Not quite rebuilding the whole car (yet ), but soon(ish) i plan. Got a GT engine ready to go in @ a later date aswell

Wouldnt be too bad, but... next doors car is right where i need some space, so we shall see
