Dying a GT interior Black

Post by polonuts »

I have had an idea.
My Black GT interior has faded to a s**t colour green/grey and looks terrible. I was thinking about re-dying it black. The only problem with this is the coloured lines going through the seat panels. I want these to stay the same colour. I have been told that some fabrics will not take dye and I am hoping that the coloured lines are this type of material.

I do need a section of GT interior to test my idea out on as I don't have a spare to hand.

Does anyone have a knackered seat (front or back) that they wouldn't mind stripping a section of material off (side squab and seat panel) and posting it to me so that I can try my idea out.

I would be happy to pay the postage costs for this, and will naturally post the results of my idea on the forum. Please PM me with your address and estimated postage cost, and I will send you a cheque or postal order to cover the postage along with my address.

Mmm, no. I think the lines are of the same material. Just look at it. It's not different from the rest.

I know they are of the same material, but I have been reliably informed that the dye used to colour the material (blues) will resist the new black dye. But as i have already said, I am not 100% sure. Besides I am sure that you would agree that it would be woth a try on an old peice of the interior if it means that we can restore the Black GT interior to showroom condition :?:

Trouble is though, it's not all black. It's made up of like black and grey spots.

I can appreciate that some of you are not keen on the idea, but does anyone have a knackered GT seat that they could send me :!:

If they do could they please let me know so that at least I can try my idea out. NOTHING LOST NOTHING GAINED :? [/quote]

Is the cloth going a sort of dark green colour?

Mine started doing that a little on the bolsters. I thought it was just sun bleaching, but the bleaching actually makes it go purple.

Today, I mixed up a solution of washing up liquid and water and applied it to the seats in a fine mist. Let it soak for about 2 mintues and rub the fabric dry with a lint free cloth. You wouldn't believe how black they come out. All the greeny colour has gone now!

Hmm, yeah, sounds like they really have faded then.

I have a spare Golf GTI seat cloth, I don't know whether that would be any use to you. Same material and stich design, but different colours.

Postage should only be a couple of quid. I will get it packaged up tomorrow and see how much it's going to cost, rather than just guessing.

I've PM'd you my address.

Please do - I had thought of similar things myself.

I'm not sure how upset I would be to lose the red and blue stripes to be honest!! :|
